Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Aggies advance to LSC semifinal behind hot-shooting nights from Miller and Collyer

LAWTON – For the first time in almost 20 years, the Cameron women's basketball team won a Lone Star Conference Tournament game, beating Midwestern State 87-76 behind a barrage of three-pointers and 17 steals.

The LSC Women's Basketball Championship kicked off on Tuesday night, and after earning the four seed, the Aggie women were set for a battle with Red River rival Midwestern State at home in the Aggie Gym. Cameron entered the night having not won a LSC postseason game since 2002.

Like they have been for the past month, the Aggies used defensive pressure and a hot-shooting hand from long range to change the narrative with a win over the Mustangs on Tuesday night. Cameron finished one three-pointer shy of the LSC championship record with 15, while forcing MSU into 27 turnovers with 17 of those coming via CU steals.

The three-point barrage was led by sophomore Karley Miller and senior Logan Collyer. Miller came off the bench and nailed five triples on eight shots, pouring in 18 points to go along with six rebounds in the game, both were season-highs for the Oklahoma Christian Academy product.

A Harrah High School graduate, Collyer had one of her best games as an Aggie, also making five three's and finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals. She, Miller, and Whitney Outon, who finished with 14 points, were responsible for all but two of CU's three-pointers in the win.

CU's top scorer, Maighan Hedge was held to just four made shots from the field but got to the foul line 10 times and converted all 10 of her attempts. She finished one assist shy of a double-double and tied Collyer with a team-best four steals.

Points were hard to come by early one as neither team had racked the five point mark until there was just over six minutes left in the first quarter. Cameron took an early six-point lead on an Outon three, but MSU responded and ended up leading CU 19-18 after 10 minutes of action.

The Aggies big quarter came during the second, as they scored 30 points with eight made triples in the frame. A 12-0 run in the first two minutes of the period but CU up 30-19. MSU kept hitting shots, but the Black and Gold were unconscious from three as Collyer hit a pair and Outon put CU up 18 with one at the 4:52 mark. The Mustangs cut the lead down to 11 with 28 seconds left thanks to a trey-ball of their own by Morgan Lenahan, but Collyer hit a second-chance shot from long-range to end the half with the Aggies up 48-34.

Midwestern State returned the favor with a big third quarter, quickly cutting the lead down to three with 6:13 left in the period on a Hannah Reynolds jumper. However, CU answered with a 9-0 to extend their lead back out to 12. The see-saw went back in favor of MSU to close the frame as they once again cut the deficit back to three on another jumper by Lenahan to end the third.

The back and forth roller-coaster continued into the fourth, with CU scoring eight straight to go up 11. MSU retaliated with a 10-0 run that got them to within one point of the Aggies with 5:21 to play. Before the Mustangs could get to fired up, Cameron was back up by 11, thanks to a 10-0 stretch that was capped by back-to-back threes by Collyer and Miller. That would be the final blow, as MSU never got back to within more than seven as CU made their free throws to close out the 87-76 win.

Cameron shot 40 percent from the floor, but the damage came from three, where they were 15-33. They also converted on 16 of their 20 free throw attempts, while MSU shot just 57.7 percent from the foul line and were 5-16 from three.

Both teams turned the ball over more than 20 times in Tuesday's game, while MSU controlled the battle on the glass 46-38 and blocked seven CU shots. Cameron eclipsed the twenty assist mark (22) for the first time this season.

Lenahan left it all out on the floor for the Mustangs, finishing with a game-high 32 points to go along with 13 rebounds and eight assists. Reynolds added 15 points and both Frances King and Haevyn Risley had 12 for MSU.

It doesn't get any easier for the Aggies, as they advance to the LSC Championship semifinal where they will meet the No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps on their home floor, where they have not lost a game since 2015. That game tips off at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 5, and the winner goes on to play the winner of the Texas A&M-Commerce and West Texas A&M matchup in the final on Saturday.
