Cameron's comeback falls short at MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Cameron volleyball team could not repeat history as their comeback fell short in a five-set loss to Midwestern State on Thursday night.

When these two teams met in mid-February, the Aggies bounced back from a loss in the first meeting of the series with a five-set win in the second match. On Wednesday, Cameron dropped the first match in Wichita Falls and were looking to repeat history by winning the second on Thursday.

In the opening frame, the Black and Gold owned a 20-16 lead and looked to be on their way to lead the match 1-0. However, a MSU timeout stopped CU in their tracks, allowing the Mustangs to score nine straight points to win the set 25-20.

Midwestern State carried that momentum into the second, as they went on a 13-1 run that put them on the high side of an 18-5 score. The Aggies got to within 10 with three straight points, two of which came on Alanni Carter kills, but that just stalled the Mustangs for the moment as they closed out the set with a 7-2 stretch, winning 25-10.

After battling back and forth in the third, Cameron got back some of their momentum, using a 9-1 stretch to take a 17-10 lead. The Mustangs were able to get back within three, but the Black and Gold rallied to the tune of a 6-1 stretch that earned them the 25-17 set three win.

In set four, it was the Mustangs who took an early advantage, leading 14-9, but the Aggies would not go down quietly, as they battled back to tie the set at 19 on a service ace by Natalia Araujo da Silva. A 4-1 swing put CU up 23-20 and after trading scores, the Aggies tied up the match on a kill by Walia Franklin that gave them a 25-22 set win.

The Aggies gas seemed to have ran out in the fourth, as MSU dominated the final set, using a 5-0 run to take an early 7-2 advantage and then adding to more four-point rallies to secure the 15-5 win and earn the match victory.

Cameron totaled 50 kills with a .131 attack percentage in the loss. Both teams recorded eight total blocks, while MSU notched seven aces, compared to the Aggies' three points from the service line. Midwestern State hit .236 on the attack with 60 kills.

Carter finished with 16 kills to go along with 15 digs. She tied with Arianna Navarrete, who had 14 kills, 14 digs, and 3.0 blocks, with a team-high 16.5 points. Franklin finished the night with 10 kills and two blocks, while JaLisa Hollingshed led the effort at the net with seven total blocks.

Additionally, Desiree Marmolejo had a team-best 25 assists, while freshmen Katie Roberson and Presley Shearin combined for 15 helpers. Sam Friedl got the start at libero and recorded a team-best 18 digs.

The Aggies, who have now lost four straight, fall to 2-6 on the season, and drop the season series to the Mustangs 1-3. Their next tests come against Oklahoma Christian on March 9 and 10 in the Aggie Gym. CU and OC split their first two matches of the season back on Feb. 2 and 3.
