Cameron battles OC to wrap up home slate

LAWTON – The Cameron University volleyball team wraps up their home slate this week as they host Oklahoma Christian for a pair of matches on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Aggie Gym.

Cameron and OC will renew their newly formed rivalry, which began on Feb. 2 and 3 in Oklahoma City, this week on CU's home floor. The Eagles got the better of the Aggies in the first meeting, winning 3-0, but the Black and Gold got revenge with a 3-2 win the next day.

Last week, the Aggies played two very different matches against Midwestern State on the road. Game one was a 3-0 loss that saw CU crack the 20-point mark in only the opening frame. The second ended up being a five-set thriller after Cameron rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match before falling in the fifth frame.

The two loses dropped the Aggies to 2-6 on the year and in danger of not making the Lone Star Conference Tournament, which will take the top-3 teams in each of the four divisions.

Cameron only ranks in the top-10 in the conference (eighth) in blocks, as they average 2.08 rejections per set. They have six players with over 10 blocks this season, led by JaLisa Hollinghed, who is averaging 0.97 blocks per set which, which is 11th best in the LSC.

On the attack, the Aggies hit .119 with 10.1 kills and 9.7 assists per set. Alanni Carter, who is ninth in the LSC with 3.42 points per set, leads CU with 89 total kills, while Arianna Navarrete has 79 and Walia Franklin has 63 kills. Desiree Marmolejo averages 5.29 assists per set, while freshman Katie Roberson is two assists shy of reaching 100 for the season.

In addition to her kills total, Carter leads CU with eight service aces, while no other player has over three. Carter averages 2.71 digs and Navarrete averages 2.87, with Sam Friedl and Presley Shearin both average over 3.5 digs per frame.

Oklahoma Christian is 3-8 on the season and 2-8 in Lone Star Conference play entering their final week of league play. The Eagles are sixth in the conference in service aces (1.38 per set) and seventh in blocks (2.08 per set). They hit .126 on the attack with just 10 kills per set.

Spencer Plato (0.52 aces per set) and Karlee Alonzo (0.48 aces per set) rank in the top-5 in the league at the service line, while Moran Demuth's 1.17 blocks per set is second best in the conference. Seven different eagles have recorded over 30 kills this season, while Plato and Jessica Souza both have over 120 assists for OC.

Both matches against OC this week will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Aggie Gym and will be available via stream on the LSC Digital Network. These are the final two home matches for CU, who will wrap up the regular season next week on the road against UAFS.
