RICHARDSON, Texas – The Cameron tennis programs ended the regular season with a pair of dominant wins over Western New Mexico as the Lone Star Conference announced the league championship bracket on Saturday.
After a pair of wins to open the weekend at UT Permian Basin on Friday, the Aggies carried their momentum all the way to New Mexico as the CU men won 7-0 and the women won 6-1 over the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
The Cameron men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and then swept singles play for their fifth win in conference play. The win cemented the squad as the top seed in the league tournament, earning a first-round bye and advancing to the championship semifinal on Friday, April 30, at 1 p.m. They will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between the four seed UT Permian Basin and the five seed DBU.
In the women's match, CU got wins from
Alex Lopez and
Pilar Jaurena on court two and
Lea Manga and
Julianne Garcia on three to earn the doubles point. The then won all but the No. 1 singles battle with all but the two match coming in straight sets. They finished the regular season with a 9-9 record overall and a 3-6 league mark which earned them the six seed in the conference tournament. They will play the three seed St. Mary's in a quarterfinal match on Thursday, April 29, at 8:30 a.m.
All three rounds of the LSC Championship will be played at the Waco Regional Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Quarterfinal matches begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, while the four semifinals will be played on Friday, April 30. The women's final will be played at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Mary 1, with the men's match to follow at 1 p.m.
The tournament format is three 6-game pro set doubles matches with a 7-point tiebreak at 6-all. Following doubles matches, teams will play six best-of-three set singles matches. Once one team reaches four points, remaining singles matches will be abandoned.
The winner of each tournament will be named the Lone Star Conference Tennis Tournament Champion and earn the league's automatic qualification to the 2021 NCAA Division II South Central Regional held May 10-11 in Arlington, Texas and hosted by Midwestern State.
