Aggie offense held quiet against No. 3 Patriots

LAWTON – Cameron had a tough time against two of the top pitchers in the Lone Star Conference on Sunday, falling 11-1 and 10-0 against No. 3 UT Tyler at McMahon Field.

The Aggie softball team began a six-game stretch against top-10 ranked opponents on Sunday in front of their home crowd and were met by a Patriot team who had won their last eight games and are led by the top pitchers in the league based on ERA in Payton Foster (0.98) and Erin Hill (0.97).

In game one, Tyler went with Foster to start in the circle against the Aggies. The sophomore hurler gave up just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in her six innings of work. She was opposed by CU's freshman Jocelyn Bright, who held her own through the first two innings.

Bright put up zeros in the first and second frames before a RBI double by Courtney Plocheck broke the scoreless tie. Polcheck would give the Aggie staff nightmares on Sunday, as she came up in the fourth inning and hit a three-run homer to giver her team a 4-0 advantage.

In the fifth, a double by Haleigh Swinney added another run to the board, ending Bright's day in the circle. Bethany Hines came in and got the final two outs of the frame, but UT Tyler came back in the sixth with a six-run frame powered by a pinch-hit grand slam by Amanda Merek.

Cameron's only run of the day would come in the bottom of the sixth, as Kaylyn Smith, who singled to leadoff the inning, came in to score on a Breley Webb single. However, that would not be enough to hold off the run-rule as UTT took the 11-1 win in six.

Hill toed the rubber in game two and was just as effective as her predecessor. The senior gave up just five hits, did not allow a walk, and struck out five in her 17th win of the season. CU was 0-9 with runners on base in the loss, stranding four on their five hits.

UT Tyler scored two runs in the first and second frames off Webb, who got the start in the circle. They added three more in the fourth before Hines came in to relieve Webb. The Patriots capped things off with a three-run seventh as they coasted to a 10-0 win.

Plochek added her second double and second homer in game two, giving her five hits in the doubleheader, forcing CU to walk her three times in the night-cap. Ashley Perez added five hits and drove in three of the team's 10 runs, same as Plochek.

Smith led CU with two hits in game two, while Khmari Edwards, Mikayla Richmond, and Kylie French were responsible for the other three.

Cameron is now 23-15 on the season and 14-12 against LSC opponents. They are scheduled to take on No. 10 Oklahoma Christian, who have won 16-straight after sweeping No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday, on Saturday, May 1, in Oklahoma City. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
