CU tennis honored by ITA for academic success

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the 2021 Division II ITA Scholar-Athletes and All-Academic Teams on Tuesday morning and both Cameron women and men's tennis programs received recognition.

Both Aggie tennis programs battled the aftermath of the pandemic this spring and still managed to excel, both on the court and in the classroom. The CU women finished second in the athletic department with a 3.589 GPA for the year, while the men were just two spots back with a team GPA of 3.309 for the 2020-21 academic year.

Cameron's men and women were both honored as ITA All-Academic Teams this season. It is the 10th straight year that the women have received the honor, while the men have claimed the recognition the past four seasons.

For a program to be named an ITA All-Academic Team, they must have a GPA of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.

Individually, Alisa Savina, Pilar Jaurena, Melany Opolz, Alex Lopez, Julianne Garcia, and Lia Woods were the six 2021 ITA Scholar-Athletes for the CU women's team. Opolz, an LSC Scholar Athlete Award winner and a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, has received the honor all four years she has been at Cameron, while Savina was awarded her third straight honor. Jaurena and Garcia are both two time Scholar-Athletes, while Lopez and Woods are first time honorees.

Cameron's men had three student-athletes honored by the ITA on Tuesday. Maycon Dias and Iliya Taranin both received their second Scholar-Athlete awards, while Bruno Vietri is a first time selection.

"We take great pride every year in the work we do not only on the tennis court but in the classroom as well," said CU head coach Josh Cobble. "For a large portion of this group, English is a second or third language, and to be able to achieve this level of academic success comes from a tremendous amount of discipline and hard work. They really take the student part of student-athlete seriously."

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and be listed on the institutional eligibility form.
