HAYS, Kan. – The Aggie volleyball team began the Fort Hays State Tiger Classic on Friday, suffering a pair of three-set losses to Adams State and the host team Tigers.
After beginning the season with a 1-4 record last week in Topeka, Kan., Cameron made their way back up to the Sunshine State for the second week of the season and four more matches against tough opponents. They started the weekend with matches against ASU and FHSU.
Cameron battled Adams State in all three sets to open the weekend, but the Grizzlies were able to best CU at the service line (8-4) and on the block (9-6) in the three-set win.
Arianna Navarrete led Cameron with 16 points in the opening match of the Tiger Classic, putting down 12 kills on a .222 attack percentage. The sophomore also had three aces and nine digs in the three-set match.
Alanni Carter added eight kills with freshman
Jacee Stelter adding six and
Bergen Campbell chipping in five.
Carter also had five digs and three blocks, one shy of
Jessica Lipkit, who led the team with four.
Noemie Narbonne and Kendall Kilchirst combined for 26 assists and 12 digs out of the setter position.
In set one, the two teams traded blows until a 7-1 stretch put ASU on top 20-16. Despite CU getting the score back to within two, the squad that upset No. 2 Angelo State earlier this week closed out the frame with three straight points, winning 25-20.
Set two was similar to the first, except this time it was a 6-0 run by Adams late in the frame that put them on top 20-17. Cameron was able to bounce back and tie things at 21 on a block by Carter and Lipkit, but after trading points, the Grizzlies once again scored three straight to win the set, 25-22.
An 8-3 rally midway through the third set, gave ASU an 18-13 advantage and put them in prime position to close out the match. However, CU showed off their resiliency, scoring four points in a row to get back to within one. That was where the deficit sat a few plays later (22-21), before Adams State made it three straight frames of scoring three-in-a-row to win the set, this time 25-21, giving them that 3-0 victory.
In the second match of the day, the Aggies had no match for the attack of the host Tigers. FHSU hit .391 and recorded 42 kills in three sets. On the other end of the court, Cameron hit just -.012 with 18 kills in the loss.
Six of those kills came off the arm of Carter, who led the Aggies with 7.5 points. Narbonne set 10 of CU's kills and was on shy of the team-high in digs, which went to
Anjolie Navarrete with seven. Campbell, Lipkit, and
Kahrizma Kyles each had two blocks for the Black and Gold.
The first set score was the closest of the three, but the Aggies managed just three rallies throughout the 25-16 loss. Cameron held the lead early in the second until a 6-1 Tiger run gave them a comfortable 17-11 advantage. The home team then used an 8-1 run to close things out and give them the 25-13 win. In the third, FHSU used runs of six and eight points to lead 19-7 as they coasted to the 25-10 win.
Cameron is now 1-6 on the young season and will look to bounce back on day two of the Tiger Classic on Saturday. They face Black Hills State first at 10 a.m. and then close out the weekend with Emporia State at 4 p.m.
