LAWTON – The Cameron volleyball team made their 2021 debut in front of their home crowd on Wednesday night against non-conference foe Southeastern Oklahoma State.
After beginning the season with nine straight matches in Kansas, the Aggies finally got to play in front of their home crowd, taking on an in-state foe in a mid-week showdown. Unfortunately for the home faithful, the outcome did not go in favor of the Black and Gold as they dropped their eighth straight contest.
Cameron's prior struggles on the attack continued into the home opener as they hit just .031 with 25 total kills in the three-set match. SEOSU hit .357 and out served (4-2) and out-blocked (4.0-3.0) the home squad.
Junior
Alanni Carter led the Aggies with a 10-kill, 10-dig double-double while also collecting an ace and hitting .261.
Noemie Narbonne had a team-high 13 assists with six digs in the loss.
The first set was close early until a 6-1 stretch gave the Savage Strom a 17-11 advantage. After fighting off an Aggie surge, the road squad scored the final four points to win 25-16.
After playing to an eight-all tie early in the second set, Southeastern used a 7-1 stretch to build up a 15-9 lead. Later in the frame, they scored seven in a row to stretch their lead to 11 (22-11) and went on to win 25-13 and take a 2-0 lead.
Cameron head coach
Brandon Stephenson switched up the starting lineup entering the third and it paid off early as multiple kills by the first-year outside
Jacee Stelter, who finished with four kills, put CU on top 10-8 and forced a Savage Storm timeout. SEOSU battled back into the lead, and after a Navarrete killed set the score at 16-14, the road team rattled off seven in a row again to take a commanding 23-14 advantage. They would go on to win 25-16 and take the match in three sets.
The Aggies eighth straight defeat moves their record to 1-9 to start the season. They carry that record into Lone Star Conference play this weekend when they visit Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International.
Friday, Sep. 17 the Black and Gold will face one of the top teams in the league in the Javelinas at 6 p.m. in Kingsville, Texas. Their road trip takes them to Laredo, Texas on Saturday, Sep. 18, where they will face the Dustdevils, who are still searching for their first win, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on the LSC Digital Network.
