ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After a solid two rounds on Monday, the Aggie men's golf team struggled in the final round of the RJGA South Central Shootout on Tuesday, shooting a 313 in the final round.
Cameron got off to a hot start on Monday in the opening round at the UNM Championship Course, and after scores of 292 and 293, was in sixth, less than 10 strokes away from the second place team. However, the third round did not go as well as they shot a 313 to finish the tournament with an 898 and a seventh place finish.
The low round of the day for the Black and Gold went to senior
Tyler Kaman. Kaman, who shot a 71 and a 73 in the first two rounds, followed those scores up with a 77 in the final round to give him a 221 total score, good for 14th place individually.
Freshman
Hamish Murray was one-under after two rounds of play in a good spot to finish in the top-10 of his first collegiate tournament. The Australian added 10 stroke to his previous round, carding an 81 on Tuesday, giving him a 224 for the event.
Devin Whipple and
Joey Kirk both added 79's to their rounds, tying each other with a 229 54-hole score, while
Preston Holmes finished with a 232 after a third round 78 on his scorecard.
Cameron totaled 35 birdies and 157 pars as a team over the two-day tournament. Kaman and Murray each had nine birdies to lead the Aggies, while Holmes had a CU-best 34 made pars. Kaman also had the third best par-3 score at +1.
Colorado State-Pueblo led the field wire-to-wire, finishing with a 54-hole score of 857, 26 strokes ahead of the second place Midwestern State. Following the Mustangs in third was Colorado Christian, while Texas A&M-Commerce came in fourth.
Despite the third round struggles, Cameron finished just five strokes back of the Lions, four back of UCCS, and three back of Western New Mexico.
CSU-Pueblo's Matt Miller came away with the top medalist honor, finishing with a six-under 210, just one stroke in front of CCU's Adam Duncan.
The Aggies next tournament on the schedule is the Ryan Palmer Invite, hosted by West Texas A&M. The event in Amarillo, Texas is slated for Oct. 4-5 at the Amarillo Country Club.
