Cameron suffers home loss to LCU

LAWTON – Cameron failed to get their first win in front of their home faithful as Lubbock Christian visited the Aggie Gym on Friday night and came away with a three-set win.

The Aggie volleyball team entered the weekend two-step looking to snap their 10 match losing skid and earn their first home win of the 2021 season. Facing a tough LCU squad, who is undefeated in Lone Star Conference play, the Black and Gold was unable to end the streak.

Cameron struggled with the Lady Chap offense in two of the three sets. LCU used a .316 percentage in set one and a .243 clip in the third to end the night with a .220 hitting percentage against CU. On the other side of the court, the Aggies hit just 0.50, including a negative percentage in the third.

LCU also controlled the serve receive, earning four aces, compared to CU's one, while the battle at the net was even, with both teams blocking six balls total.

Bergen Campbell led Cameron with eight kills and a .278 hitting percentage to go along with two blocks. Arianna Navarrete (seven) and Anjolie Navarrete (six) combined for 13 kills put both hit in the negative on the attack.

Presley Shearin had a team-high 15 assists with five digs and Noemie Narbonne added 13 assists and five digs. Ar. Naverrete and Sydney Bolin both had a team-high 15 digs, while Caitlyn Henderson had four blocks in just two sets.

The first set was close early, but a 7-1 stretch from the Lady Chaps gave them a 13-7 advantage. Cameron was able to come back and get within two on a kill by freshman Jacee Stelter, but late in the frame a 5-1 run by LCU closed things out 25-17.

Errors early in the second put CU behind 6-1, forcing head coach Brandon Stephenson to call his first timeout quickly. The stoppage worked as the home squad used a 4-1 stretch capped by a block by Henderson and Campbell to get to within two. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of the frame until LCU pulled ahead 24-18. Despite a late rally by CU, a kill by Sage Cain gave the Lady Chaps a 2-0 lead with the 25-21 win.

Cameron again trailed 6-1 to start the third and then pulled back within two points a few plays later. From there, the Aggies were unable to start a rally, not getting back-to-back points the rest of the way. LCU ended the frame with a 5-1 run to give them a 25-14 win.

The Aggies are now sitting at 1-12 on the year and 0-3 in conference play. They face an even tougher opponent on Saturday when the host the second ranked Angelo State Rambelles with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
