Schreiner, Savage, and Slater account for 43 points in road loss to Lions

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Brock Schreiner, Colt Savage, and Connor Slater combined for 43 points as Cameron dropped their second Lone Star Conference game 74-63 at UAFS on Sunday.

The Aggies entered league play this weekend on a two-game losing skid, which has now stretch to four games as CU opened league play with back-to-back losses this weekend, the latest was a tough 11-point loss to the Lions in their first game of the new year.

Cameron had a trio of players with solid games but did not get much support from the rest of the bench. Schreiner led the way with 15 points to go along with seven boards. However, the fourth-year guard was 6-15 from the floor and just 2-11 from three. Savage added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Aggies' first double-double of the year. Slater chipped in 14 points as well while going 6-11 from the floor.

Additionally, Joshua Fanuiel scored around his season average with eight points off the bench and Deondre Earley chipped in five points. No other Aggie had more than four points in the loss.

As a team, Cameron shot 43.1 percent from the floor but was just 5-21 from three and 14-21 from the charity stripe. They won the rebounding battle 34-31, but turned the ball over 13 times, compared to the Lions seven giveaways.

Neither offense was firing on all cylinders in the opening half as there were just 23 (12-11) total points on the board halfway through the first.  UAFS started to make a run, leading by 13 with 2:39 to play, but CU was able to cut that deficit to eight by the break thanks to a three by Schreiner in the final seconds.

Schreiner had nine points at the half while CU was shooting 41 percent from the field and was just 1-8 from three and 5-9 from the foul line. UAFS didn't shoot much better but made three triples and was 9-13 from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes.

After falling behind by 11 early in the second half, Cameron was able to cut the deficit to three with 9:03 to play behind a surge from the freshman Fanuiel. A few plays later, Savage knocked down a step-back jumper to put the Aggies within one (53-52) with 7:42 to play. Cameron went cold in the final minutes while UAFS rallied and built their lead to at most 16 with just under a minute on the clock. A late layup by Slater set the final score at 74-63.

The LSC's leading scorer entering the weekend Matthew Wilson was held to just five points, but Courtney Murrell and Chris Rollins picked up the slack with 20 and 17 points respectively. Rollins also had 12 boards while UAFS shot 44.6 percent from the field while going 7-21 from three and 17-24 from the charity stripe in the win.

Cameron now sits at 2-7 on the season and 0-2 in LSC games that count toward the league standings. They welcome UT Tyler to the Aggie Gym on Thursday, Jan. 6, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. or after the women's game against the Patriots.
