FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Aggie women got big performances from
Maighan Hedge,
Stephanie Peterson, and
Korie Allensworth against UAFS on Sunday as they claimed their second straight win to open Lone Star Conference play.
Cameron officially opened conference play on New Year's Eve with an eight-point win over Oklahoma Christian and then followed that up by opening 2022 with a 15-point victory over the UAFS Lady Lions on Sunday thanks to some hot shooting from three-point range.
The Aggies had their second-best shooting game of the season, making 50.8 percent of their shots from the field and going 15-30 from behind the three-point arc. They made 10 more triples than their opponent, who got to the charity stripe 15 more times despite the loss. UAFS also controlled the glass 42-37 while CU slightly won the turnover battle 14-13.
Maighan Hedge was one of four players to reach double-figures in the scoring column. The fourth-year guard chipped away at the CU career scoring mark with 28 points on 10-19 shooting from the field and 6-10 shooting from three. She needs just 32 more points to tie the program record of 1,602 career points.
Stephanie Peterson also had a big game for CU, going 7-13 from the field on her way to 18 points and nine rebounds, one board shy of her second double-double of the season.
Korie Allensworth did get a double-double for CU, chipping in 15 points and 10 boards in the win.
Whitney Outon added 11 points, all coming in the opening half.
The Aggies got off to a blistering start, leading 10-0 and forcing a UAFS timeout early in the opening quarter. They continued their hot shooting by making 55.6 percent of their attempts in the opening frame to lead the home team 29-17. CU cooled down in the second quarter, shooting just 25 percent from the floor with all four of their made field goals coming from three. They still lead UAFS 46-31 at the halftime break.
Outon led the way with 11 points at the half, going a perfect 3-3 from three and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Hedge added 10 points at the break and
LaKya Leslie chipped in seven off the Aggie bench. Cameron was also 10-11 from the charity stripe as a team in the first half.
The third quarter provided a mixed bag of emotions for the Aggies as they went from nearly leading by 20 points at the 7:23 mark to leading by just two with 2:16 left in the period. Cameron was able to jump back out by eight 65-57 heading into the final frame. They carried that momentum by going 4-4 to start the frame and hitting three quick threes to go back up by 18 with 7:22 to play. CU kept the Lady Lions are arms reach in the final minutes and held on for the 94-79 win.
UAFS shot just under 39 percent from the field while going 5-23 from three and 26-32 from the charity stripe, which kept the game from getting out of hand. Paige Elston led the team with 21 points while Mar'Shaila Lollie added an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Cameron is now 7-5 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. For the first time in almost a month, they return to the Aggie Gym on Thursday, Jan. 6, when they host UT Tyler. Tipp is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
