TOPEKA, Kan. – The Cameron track and field programs opened their indoor season at the Washburn Open this weekend, resulting in a handful of program records falling over the two-day meet.
The heavily attended meet hosted by Washburn began on Friday with Aggie student-athletes competing in a total of nine events.
Alexis Chao took down the program's record for the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 3.20m and placing second in the event to St. Mary's Gabrielle Moore, who cleared 3.30m. Chao, a newcomer to the CU squad, competed against teammate
Hailey Sutton, who finished in seventh, clearing 2.60m.
Ethan Stephens placed fourth in the men's pole vault, clearing 3.90m.
Madison Edwards has the second program record of the day, finishing the men's 600 with a time of 1:16.38, good for 16th place.
Sebastian Padron-Casadiegos was just a second behind him at 1:17.81 and
Allen Vasquez placed 30th in the event.
Melohdee Marroquin and
Vivien Chesire finished 23rd and 25th in the women's 600 race.
Prisca Kouao ran a time of 26.70 in the women's 200 dash, while
Belle Vignes placed third in the women's 5000 with a time of 19:37.63.
Edward Kipruto led a group of three Aggies in the men's 5000, running a time of 15:42.85 and placing 20th.
Cameron's men (
Justin Hill,
Kevin Garcia,
Nathan Kemp, and
Jason Cousineau) placed eighth in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:52.12 and the women (
Genevieve Young,
Arian Spears,
Alejandra Collier, and
Daesha Brathwaite) came in 11th with a time of 13:37.38 in their respective relay.
On Saturday, Cameron had athletes competing in the 800, 3000, mile, and 4x400 events.
Kemp led a group of five Aggies competing in the men's 800, placing 21st with a time of 1:59.36.
Alejandra Collier paced the women's trio in the event, running a time of 2:36.47 to place 35th.
Brathwaite, a first-year freshman, finished 10th in the mile, running a time of 5:29.07 while her teammate and fellow freshman Young placed 22nd. The men's race was highly competitive with CU's top finisher,
Saulo Yoel, an All-LSC performer in cross country, coming in 43rd with a time of 4:39.02.
Vignes took down another CU record in the women's 3000, finishing with a time of 11:01.63 and placing 16thoverall. The Aggie men had four compete in the event led by Cousineau in 22nd with a time of 9:00.76 and Kipruto in 24th with a time of 9:06.02.
The Washburn Open closed with the 4x400 relay with the men's team of Edwards,
Lamon Miles, Garcia, and Padron-Casadiegos placing 17th with a time of 3:30.88.
Cameron's next event will be next Saturday, Feb. 5, when they compete in the Wichita State hosted Herm Wilson Invitational in Wichita, Kan.
