LAWTON –
Brock Schreiner reached 1,000 points for his career as the Cameron men upset No. 3 Lubbock Christian on Saturday, 89-85, in a double overtime thriller at the Aggie Gym.
Â
The Aggies entered Saturday coming off their first conference win on Thursday against Eastern New Mexico, earning
Jeff Mahoney his first win as head coach and snapping a two-month long losing skid. Facing off against the former No. 1 team in the country on Saturday, the scrappy CU men treated the home crowd to one of the biggest upsets in program history.Â
Â
Schreiner, a fourth-year guard from Choctaw, Okla., needed 14 points to become the 19th member of the Cameron men's basketball 1,000-point club. After scoring six points in the first half, the combo guard scored five points in the first nine minutes of the second before hitting a step-back three with 10:07 on the clock to reach the milestone. However, Schreiner's biggest play of the night had yet to happen.Â
Â
Lubbock Christian, who suffered their first loss of the season just last week, looked to be well on their way to a big road win when they built up a 12-point lead midway through the opening half. Mahoney's squad never wavered as they quickly turned the game around, using a 17-0 run fueled by the play of
Alex Gonzalez to go up by six with 2:55 left until the break. The two teams traded buckets resulting in a 41-34 halftime score.Â
Â
Gonzalez had 12 points in the first 20 minutes, going 5-6 from the field and grabbing five rebounds. CU shot just 30 percent from the floor in the first but controlled the turnover and rebounding battles as they held the lead.Â
Â
Lubbock Christian trailed most of the second half, including when they were down 11 with just 3:09 to play. Aamer Muhammad led a late charge that saw the top-5 ranked Chaps back on top by one with just under a minute to play. Cameron used an offensive board to extend their possession for
Colt Savage to give them a 71-70 advantage, but a Parker Hicks three on the next possession put the road team up by two with 12 to play. CU had a chance at the win as
Connor Slater drove the lane and made a layup while being fouled with less than a second left, but the free throw did not go in for the third-year forward, forcing overtime.Â
Â
After trading buckets to start the first extra five minutes, three-straight free throws by CU put them up 80-77. Hick, who averaged over 35 points this week for LCU, hit two clutch free throws in the final seconds to tie the game at 81. Slater got a good look at a game-winning three, but it did not go in, forcing a second overtime.Â
Â
Lubbock took the early lead in the second OT, but three straight points by Savage put CU up 84-83. Hicks answered with two more free throws, but Schreiner hit a dagger three with 24 seconds left to put the Black and Gold up two. The hero of the night then grabbed a key defensive rebound on LCU's next possession and sunk a pair of foul shots with eight seconds left to put CU up 89-85. Muhammad's ensuing three did not hit and CU was able to celebrate Mahoney's second win at the helm.
Â
Cameron shot 47 percent from the field for the entire game while going 6-25 from three and 13-20 from the charity stripe, well off their usually 72 percent. They also dominated the glass 51-38, which included 16 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second chance points.Â
Â
Schreiner and Savage each had 20 points with Savage adding 10 rebounds and Schreiner grabbing seven boards, and Slater added 18 points and eight rebounds.
Deondre Earley chipped in nine points, six boards, three assists, two steals, and a block from his point guard position while big-man
Kenyon Holcombe added seven points, six rebounds, and a season-high four rejections.
Â
Cameron is now 4-14 overall this season and 2-9 in league play, earning their way out of the bottom of the league standings. They have a rematch with West Texas A&M on Tuesday, Feb. 15, in Canyon, Texas after having played them just 10 days prior at home.Â
