OKLAHOMA CITY – The Cameron women's tennis team made a big statement on Thursday by beating the fifth ranked Columbus State Cougars 5-2 at a neutral site in OKC.
The Aggies entered the match with No. 5 CSU with a 3-2 record against some tough JUCO, Division II, and Division I opponents. The Cougars entered the middle of the week match with a 3-0 mark so far this spring.
Cameron fell behind in the match early with Columbus State scoring the double point with wins at two and three. CU's
Vasilisa Polunova and
Karolina Glowinska were able to win at two, 6-2, but losses at one and three put them behind heading into singles play.
The Aggies then took care of business in singles. Polunova won big at one, 6-1, 6-1, while
Anastasia Uspenskaia secured a big upset win over No. 25 Mariana Ramirez 6-2, 7-5 at three. Glowinska also won in two sets at six, while
Lea Manga and
Magda Wawrowska won in three sets at the two and five spots. CU's lone loss came at four, where
Kateryna Rudenko led 6-1 before falling 7-5 in the second and 6-3 in the third.
Cameron's next match is scheduled for Friday, March 4, against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Wichita Falls, Texas. They are then back at home two days later, March 6, hosting Southwest Baptist.
