Cameron drops season finale to TAMUK

LAWTON – The Aggie men's basketball team honored four-year players Brock Schreiner and Darius Green prior to CU's game against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday but were unable to close out the season with a win.

Cameron could not slow down a red-hot Javelina team in their final game of the 2021-22 season, losing 87-62 to fall to finish the year with a 5-18 overall record and a 3-12 Lone Star Conference mark.

The only tie in the game was 2-2 as the Javelinas jumped out to a 24-8 advantage in the first 10 minutes of play. Cameron tried to make a run to end the half, but a Sammy Brooks three in the final seconds put the road team back up by 16 at the half.

TAMUK continued to fire on all cylinders in the second half, shooting 60 percent from the field while going 5-10 from three to score 44 points. Cameron scored 35 points on the other end of the floor with Colt Savage scoring 12 of those and Kenyon Holcombe adding 11 points. It was not enough as the Hogs built up to their lead to 25, which was the final deficit.

Savage finished with a game-high 20 points going 8-17 from the floor and 4-10 from three. Connor Slater added 14 points on 4-7 shooting with Holcombe adding 11 and three blocks. Deondre Earley was also in double-figures with 10 points and five rebounds.

Cameron finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field, 28 percent from three, and 83 percent (5-6) from the charity stripe. They were out-rebounded 40-26, but turned the ball over just eight times in the loss.

TAMUK hit 54 percent of their shots including 14-28 from three. C.J. Smith led the road team with 20 points, knocking down six three-pointers in the win.
