WICHITA, KS – After losing four straight matches, the Aggie men got back on track on Saturday with a 4-3 win over Newman that came down to the final set in singles play.
After winning their spring opener, the Cameron men's tennis team had lost four straight games against some tough opponents. They are now 2-4 on the year after their close road win against the Jets.
Cameron controlled the match early by winning all three doubles matches.
Joao Duleba and
Alvaro Chavez started the match with a 6-2 win at two followed by 6-4 wins by
Carlos Vidal and
Kristian Kubik at one and
Thomas Cardona and
Tomas Almeida at three.
Newman got on the board with wins at one and five singles to take a 2-1 lead. Chavez tied things up at two with a 7-6, 6-4 win in the four singles spot, but the Jets answered with a three set win at two.
Cardona came back from a 7-6 set one loss to win 6-2, 7-5 in the final two sets to win at three and then Kubik came back from his own first set loss to take sets two and three 7-6, 6-2 to secure the win for the Aggies.
The Aggie men will be back at home on Thursday, March 3, when they host Southeastern Oklahoma State. The in-state battle is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex on the campus of Cameron University.
