Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hedge and Outon combine for 28 points in Senior Day win

LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team earned the six seed in the Lone Star Conference Tournament after their 74-68 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday in the Aggie Gym.

On a day when the Aggies honored four-year players Maighan Hedge and Whitney Outon the Aggies were playing for seeding when they hosted the Javelinas, who they were tied with in the LSC standings going into the day. The win over TAMUK put them ahead of the Javs and UT Tyler in the final ranks.

Cameron got off to a blistering start, scoring 17 straight points before the Javelinas even got on the scoreboard. All of that happened in the opening 10 minutes with the Aggies shooting 35 percent from the field and TAMUK shooting just seven percent in the opening quarter.

The Javelinas quickly made sure the game was not going to be a cake-walk, outscoring the home team 17-16 in the second period. They went from shooting under 10 percent from the field to 45 percent in the second, making three triples while CU shot just under 30 percent from the field. Despite the struggles, the Black and Gold still led by 14 at the half.

TAMUK started feeding forward Georgia Ohiaeri in the third quarter, as she led the way in a 32-point quarter. The hogs made all but four of their 16 shot attempts while the Aggies tried to keep up with the scoring outburst by going 7-9 from the charity stripe and hitting 46 percent of their shots from the floor. The run by the road squad saw them down by just two heading into the final frame.

Despite the attempt at the comeback, the Aggies never relinquished the lead the entire game. Second-year forward Kassie Boorer was key down the stretch, making the first three shots in the fourth for CU. Then it was Hedge's turn to put the team on her back, scoring seven straight for the Aggies capped by a three-pointer with 3:11 to play, giving her team a 70-63 lead. A pair of free throws by Korie Allensworth put CU up nine with 1:15 left in the game. TAMUK answered with five straight points, but a pair of free throws by Hedge with 11 ticks on the clock sealed the 74-68 win.

Hedge led the Aggies with 18 points, shooting 6-15 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Stephanie Peterson added 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals while Outon finished the game with 10 points. Boorer scored 13 points for the second straight game while Allensworth grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go with five points.

Cameron finished the game shooting 40 percent as a team, going 10-31 from three and 14-22 from the foul line. They also out-rebounded TAMUK 40-36, just the third time this season they were plus in the rebound margin, and turned them over 15 times, resulting in 15 points.

The Aggies 16th win of the season is the most by an Aggie team in 20 years (20 in 2001-02). Their sixth-place finish earns them a meeting with Eastern New Mexico on Tuesday, March 1, at 6 p.m. in the Aggie Gym for the first round of the conference tournament. CU beat the Greyhounds at home by one point back on Feb. 10 of this year.
