Cameron drops a pair to No. 9 Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Aggie bats were held in check on Saturday as the ninth ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas swept the Lone Star Conference doubleheader against CU, 8-0 and 6-2.

Cameron entered their first conference road trip coming off a split of their first four conference games, which included a sweep of a top-10 ranked Angelo State team. The Aggies looked for another statement on Saturday in Kingsville, but the stout TAMUK pitching staff held CU to just seven hits during the twin-bill.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Javelinas' Beth Montes didn't need much run support as she held CU to just three hits while recording six K's in the shutout win. Her offense provided eight runs, including four in the sixth to earn the run-rule victory.

Khmari Edwards provided two of CU's hits, one of which was a double, while freshman Kaiden Boren had the other. Jocelyn Bright received the loss in the circle, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out a trio of TAMUK batters.

The Aggies were able to get a pair of runs on the scoreboard against Saidi Castillo in game two, but the former LSC Freshman of the Year still held the CU lineup to four hits with five punch-outs and no free passes.

Breley Webb provided a majority of CU's offense, going 2-3 with a solo homer in the seventh inning. Karis Clark and Kylie French had the other two hits for the Black and Gold, with Clark scoring on a double steal in the fourth.

Webb also started the game in the circle, with just a pair of innings getting away from her in the loss. TAMUK scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead and then added their sixth run in the sixth inning. Webb gave up five earned runs on 10 hits in her five innings of work; Josie Swafford struck out two batters during her one inning of work.

Cameron will have a quick turnaround for the second-straight week as they visit Texas A&M International on Sunday for another LSC twin-bill. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. in Laredo, Texas.
