LAWTON – The Aggie softball team used early offense to earn a season sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State by winning two games on Wednesday, 8-6 and 7-4, in the team's home openers.
After two postponements due to weather, Cameron finally made their home debut against the Bulldogs in a mid-week doubleheader at McMahon Field. CU put up crooked first innings in both games to help them earn the sweep.
In the first game of the day, SWOSU got a run in the top of the first thanks to a Breanna Simmons solo homer.
The Aggies quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Kylie French and
Breley Webb had back-to-back doubles with French driving in
Maci McMurtrey and Webb bringing home
Khmari Edwards and the CU third baseman on hers.
Leading 4-1, Cameron added to their advantage in the next inning as freshman backstop
Kaiden Boren hit a solo homer of her own to right centerfield.
The Bulldogs got that run back in the top of the third, but
Josie Swafford followed that up with a RBI single to score Edwards in the bottom of the inning to extend CU's lead back out to three.
After a misplayed ball in the outfield resulted in another Southwestern run in the top of the fifth, Webb came up clutch again, driving in three runs on her first long ball of the season.
SWOSU made it interesting with a 3-run homer of their own in the top of the seventh, by Swafford was able to limit the damage to that in the 8-6 win.
Webb got the win in the circle, giving up four earned runs on seven hits while recording a pair of strikeouts. Swafford threw the seventh, allowing just the one run on one hit and a walk while striking out one batter.
Thanks to her two extra-base hits, Webb drove in five runs in the game while scoring one as well. The other four Aggie hits were distributed between Edwards, French, Swafford, and Boren.
Like the first game of the twin-bull, both teams scored in the first inning. After SWOSU scored two in their half, the Aggies answered with four of their own thanks to a quartet of RBI singles by French,
Karis Clark,
Mikayla Richmond, and Boren.
Cameron scored single runs in the next two innings with French driving in Edwards in the second and Boren bringing home Clark on a single in the third.
SWOSU cut the CU lead to 6-4 with two runs in the fourth, but the Aggies responded by scoring a run on another Swafford RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
Starter
Jocelyn Bright allowed just two base runners in the final three innings to secure the 7-4 win, her fourth of the season. The sophomore gave up just three earned runs on seven hits and three walks while punching out six batters.
Cameron totaled 11 hits and stranded eight runners on base in game two. French had three of those hits, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs. Clark and Boren each had a pair of hits with Boren totaling two RBI in the win.
The Aggies are now 12-6 overall this season with their three-game season sweep of the Bulldogs. They begin Lone Star Conference play on Friday when they host No. 6 Angelo State for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
