TROPHY CLUB, Texas – Cameron concludes the Lion Invitational in third place with a 54-hole score of 890, with three players finishing in the top-20 individually.
The Aggies opened the three-round event at the Trophy Club in fifth and then started a second-round comeback before play was halted due to weather. They came back and finished the second round with a 293, good for second place, and then added a 300 in the final round.
Cameron completed the second round with a 293 and were 10 strokes back of ATU entering the final round.
Tyler Kaman led the way with a 71 while
Trevor Mierl,
Preston Holmes, and
Hamish Murray all carded a 74 in the second round with
Joey Kirk adding a 75. Mierl and Kaman both sat in the top-10 individually after 36 completed holes.
In the third and final round, Holmes led the way, carding two birdies to finish with a 1-under 71. He finished with a 224, two back of Mierl, who finished shot a 78 in the third round to place 11th individually. Kaman was sandwich between the two with a 223 after shooting a 77 in the final round Tuesday.
Additionally, Murray shot a 75 during the final 18 holes to finish with a 227, one stroke back of his teammate Kirk, who carded a 77 as well during the third and final round.
Cameron totaled 172 pars, the second most of the field, and 31 birdies during the two days in Trophy Club. Kaman tied for the field-lead with 39 made pars while Mierl led the Black and Gold with nine birdies and a 1-under score of the par-3 holes.
The Wonder Boys came away with a 17-stroke win with their 871, besting Midwestern State who shot an 888, two strokes ahead of Cameron. Southwestern Oklahoma State and West Texas rounded out the top-5 teams with SWOSU finishing seven back of the Aggies.
MSU's Jake Doggett led the whole way and had his second sub-70 score on Tuesday to finish with a 208, six better than the runner-up in the tournament Francois Jacobs from ATU.
Cameron's final tune-up event of the spring before the Lone Star Conference Championship will be the DBU Men's Classic, April 4-5, at he the Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas.
