LAWTON – Cameron tennis came away with a pair of Lone Star Conference wins on Friday as the 10th ranked women beat UT Permian Basin 7-0 and the men won 6-1 over the Falcons.
The Aggies are coming off splitting a pair of matches against rival Midwestern State on Tuesday and with the women winning their second straight conference match and the men getting back to above .500 with the victories over UTPB.
Cameron's women opened their match by winning the doubles point but they had to come from behind as UTPB took the battle at three before
Karolina Glowinska and
Vasilisa Polunova won 6-2 at the two spot and
Anastasia Uspenskaia and
Magda Wawrowska winning 6-4 at one.
Uspenskaia kicked off the sweep of singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win at two followed by wins at three and four by
Lea Manga and
Kateryna Rudenko to clinch the win with a 4-0 lead. Polunova bounced back from a 7-6 loss in set one to win 6-0 and 10-5 in the remaining two and then Wawrowska and
Pilar Jaurena won 10-7 in each of their tiebreakers to finish off the 7-0 sweep.
The top-10 ranked Aggies move to 15-3 overall this spring and 6-1 in league play which keeps them in a tie at the top of the conference standings.
Cameron's men swept doubles to start their match against the Falcons, with
Tomas Almeida and
Thomas Cardona winning 7-6 at one,
Kristian Kubik and
Carlos Vidal winning 7-5 at two, and
Joao Duleba and
Marek Slojewski winning 6-4 at three.
Almeida cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at one to start singles and Cardona followed with a 7-5, 6-0 win at two. The match clinching point came from Kubik at four when he won 6-2, 7-5 quickly followed by a 2-set win from Vidal at three. Duleba gave CU their sixth point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at six before UTPB claimed the final point at five in the tiebreaker.
The Aggies are now 10-7 on the season and 3-2 in league matches with the win. They are sitting in fourth place in the LSC standings with just one week of matches to play before the postseason.
Both Cameron tennis teams are back at home on Saturday as the host Western New Mexico for a pair of league matches beginning at 10 a.m. at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
