Murray, Kaman, Whipple, and Phillips claim LSC honors

GLEN ROSE, Texas – Four Aggies were honored by the Lone Star Conference as the end of the year men's golf awards and All-Conference teams were announced on Sunday night at the LSC Championship banquet prior to the start of the tournament.

Cameron men's golf racked up the LSC honors after one of their best regular seasons in recent history. Three earned special accolades while two were named to the All-Conference teams.

Head Coach Austin Phillips was named the LSC Coach of the Year after just one season leading the Black and Gold. This year, the CU men's golf team finished outside of the top-5 in just two tournaments, while recording three second place finished while also winning the Rattler Invitational back in February. The Aggies also set a program record with a scoring over of 290.93 this season.

Hamish Murray was named both the LSC Freshman of the Year and All-LSC Second Team after a season where he averaged a score of 72.97 in 30 rounds played. Murray, from Sydney Australia, had four top-5 finishes and seven top-25 finishes during his debut season and recorded 98 birdies, second most all-time in a season for Cameron.

Senior Tyler Kaman was selected to the All-LSC First Team after carding a 72.97 scoring average over 30 rounds. The 15th ranked player in the region, Kaman had three top-10 finishes and finished outside of the top-25 just once. He won the Ryan Palmer Invite with a score of 204 which included a 65, tied for the lowest round by an Aggie in recorded program history.

Another Senior Devin Whipple was named the Academic Player of the Year, leading a group of five players from around the league on the All-Academic Team. Now a 4-time LSC All-Academic selection from Brea, Calif., Whipple average a scoring average of 74.60 in 15 rounds played this season.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Athlete of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.

Phillips claims CU's 10th Coach of the Year honor with longtime head man Jerry Hrnciar claiming the other nine. Murray joins Noah Hasse (2017) and Cullen Stahl (2013) as the only Aggies to be named Freshman of the Year. Whipple is the ninth Academic Player of the Year in CU history with the last being Dario Gabriel in 2019, who won three straight.

Additionally, Midwestern State's Jake Doggett was named the 2021-22 Player of the Year and Texas A&M-Commerce's Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk was selected the Newcomer of the Year.

The Lone Star Conference Men's Golf Championship tees off Monday morning at the Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose, Texas on the Apache Links (par-72, 7,063 yards).

All 13 teams will play the first and second rounds on Monday and then the third round on Tuesday. The top four teams based on the 54-holes will play medal match play Tuesday afternoon and then the finals will be Wednesday morning to decide the Conference Champion.

Cameron has won 10 LSC Championships over the years with the last one coming back in 2016 which capped off a three-straight title run.
