LAWTON – The No. 8 ranked Cameron women's tennis team clinched at least a share of the Lone Star Conference regular season championship on Thursday as both CU teams swept UAFS 7-0.
In their final home matches of the season, the Aggies left no doubt that they have momentum heading into postseason play next weekend as neither team gave up a point to the visiting Lions on a hot windy day in southwest Oklahoma.
Cameron's women needed the win to improve to 8-1 and clinch a share of the regular season league title if St. Mary's and Angelo State both win their remaining LSC matches on Saturday. If both lose, CU claims the title outright.
The Aggies looked like the No. 1 team in the South Central Region from the start, dominating doubles play with a 6-0 win from the newly top-5 ranked duo of
Magda Wawrowska and
Anastasia Uspenskaia, a 6-2 win from
Karolina Glowinska and
Vasilisa Polunova, and a 6-1 win from
Lea Manga and
Kateryna Rudenko at three.
Leading 1-0, the Aggies got quick wins from the 32nd ranked Polunova at one and Rudenko at four. CU clinched the win with a 6-2, 7-5 win from Uspenskaia at two and then got two set wins from Wawrowska at five and
Pilar Jaurena at six. The only match to go past two sets was at three where the 42nd Manga won the tiebreaker 13-11 to secure the sweep.
The match against the Lions was CU's last of the regular season as they finish their schedule with an 18-4 overall record and the 8-1 mark in conference play.
Ranked No. 40 in the nation by the ITA, the CU men got off to a quick start as well against UAFS as they earned a 6-1 win from
Tomas Almeida and
Thomas Cardona at one and then 6-4 wins from both
Kristian Kubik and
Carlos Vidal and
Marek Slojewski and
Joao Duleba at the other two spots.
Announced the LSC Player of the Week on Thursday, Cardona got CU out to a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win by the 22nd ranked singles play in Division II. Kubik followed with a 7-5, 6-1 win at four and then Almeida clinched the win with a comeback 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at one.
Sean Batkis at five and Duleba at six both added 2-set wins while Vidal battled in a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 win by taking the tiebreaker 7-2 to finish off the sweep.
Cameron is now 12-7 overall and 5-2 in LSC play, which has them in third in the league standings heading into the last weekend of matches.
The men have one more match on their regular season schedule as they battle No. 17 Ouachita Baptist on Saturday in Plano, Texas at 2 p.m.
