Game Recap: Softball |

Led by Boren, Aggies homer six times in sweep of Greyhounds

PORTALES, N.M. – Freshman Kaiden Boren hit two home runs and totaled five hits and three RBI as Cameron softball swept Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Sunday.

The Aggies streak of five straight LSC twin bill splits was snapped on Friday, but they made up for it by splitting the weekend with 7-3 and 4-2 wins over the Greyhounds powered by six home runs by the CU lineup and 17 combined strikeouts by the pitching staff.

Cameron scored early and often in game one. Karis Clark kicked it off with a solo homer in the first and then Breley Webb had a sacrifice fly in the third, driving in Khmari Edwards

The Aggies then added three runs in the fourth as Boren hit her first dinger of the day, followed by a RBI singles by Edwards and Clark to make it a 5-0 game.

In the sixth, Ashlynn Bruce and Edwards went back-to-back to make it a 7-0 game. Edward's homer was her team-leading eighth homer of the season while the long ball by Bruce was her second of the spring.

The Greyhounds broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs, two with two outs, but Webb was able to get a strikeout for the final out to earn the win.

Webb gave up just four hits and one walk while just one of the runs scored was earned. The fourth-year player also struck out eight batters in her ninth win of the season.

Edwards and Boren both had three hits, leading a CU lineup that had 16 hits in the win. Bruce and Clark both had two hits with Edwards and Clark each driving in two runs for the Black and Gold in game one.

Game two was more of a pitcher's duel with Josie Swafford going up against the LSC's leader in strikeouts Brook Leger.

After a 55-minute delay in the opening frame, Boren got to Leger in the second for her second homer of the day and eighth of her freshman campaign, tying Edwards for the team lead.

Eastern New Mexico answered with a run in the third, but CU answered as the first-year catcher came up big again with a RBI single in the fourth, driving in pinch runner Alyssa Deanda

Cameron added to their lead in the seventh as Haley Castle got in on the action with her seventh homer, a solo shot, and then Kylie French drove in Bruce on a fly ball to right field to make it a 4-1 game.

The Greyhounds tried to mount another seventh inning comeback, getting a run on a 2-out single, but Swafford got the final out to end the threat and earn the win.

Swafford struck out 10 batters while giving up just one earned run, two total, on three hits and three walks to earn her sixth win of the spring.

Boren added to her solid day at the plate, going 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI while the other four hits by the Aggies were spread across four other batters. CU also struck out just twice against Leger.

Cameron moves to 21-17 on the season and 9-11 in conference play with the two wins. They are now in ninth in the conference standings with the top-10 teams making the postseason.

The Aggies will be back at home next weekend, their second to last homestand of the spring, hosting Western New Mexico on Friday, April 8, for two games and then UT Permian Basin for Senior Day on Sunday, April 10.
