Aggies held scoreless by Lady Buffs in LSC Championship first round

TYLER, Texas – The Cameron softball season came to an end on Friday afternoon as they lost a 4-0 game to the 8-seed West Texas A&M in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship.

After day one of the LSC tournament was pushed back 25 hours due to heavy rainfall in Tyler on Thursday, the Aggies finally got a chance for a rematch with the Lady Buffs with the winner advancing to face the No. 1 seed Patriots on Friday night.

The Aggie were unable to capitalize on early base runners as they stranded runners in the first and second innings. WT was able to come through with clutch hits as back-to-back RBI hits in the first against CU starter Breley Webb gave them a 2-0 lead.

After back-to-back scoreless frames, the Lady Buffs added two more to their run total in the fourth as back-to-back doubles scored a run and bumped Webb from the game, forcing head coach Kayla Adams to bring in Josie Swafford. A wild pitch later in the frame allowed the fourth run to score.

"I definitely was confident going into the game," said Webb about her outing on Friday. "I think some things just kind of fell apart and we did not break up their (WT's) energy. They just kept up the energy and got timely hits and that's what got it done for them."

Swafford gave up just one hit in the final three innings, but unfortunately, the CU lineup was held hitless in the final frames by relief pitcher Kyra Lair, who struck out four to record the save and give WT the chance to play again.

Cameron's four hits were recorded by Khmari Edwards, who also stole her 30th base of the season on Friday, Karis Clark, Webb and LSC Freshman of the Year Kaiden Boren, who had a double. The Aggies struck out six times as a team and stranded two runners.

"Our bats just didn't get going," said Adams after the loss. "We had runners on early but we just couldn't put it together and it was a tough day and a tough loss… we have a lot of growing and building to do for the future."

The Aggies end the 2022 season with a 25-24 overall record after Friday's loss but have a lot to build on as they return all but three players for 2023, including All-Conference selections Edwards and Boren.

"Unlike previous years we came into the season as more of an underdog," said Edwards while reflecting on the year. "We had a lot to prove, and I hope that in the future we can come together and be the team that we know we can be."
