PUEBLO, Colo. – After making a push for the top-4 on Friday, the Aggies dropped on the final day of the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional, finishing in 13th with a three-round score of 861.
Led by a program record tying low of 65 by
Joey Kirk, Cameron surged in the second round of the regional just 24-hours prior to Saturday's round, shooting a 281. Their final round was seven strokes higher at 288, which dropped them four sports on the team leaderboard.
Kirk ended his postseason event with a 74, making a pair of birdies as well as three bogies and a double on the final hole of the round. He tied for 20th individually with a 54-hole score of 212, three strokes better than his freshman teammate
Hamish Murray.
Murray's 215 came after he shot 73 on Saturday, making one birdies and eight pars on the front nine and then recording three over-par holes on the back. Fellow freshman
Trevor Mierl also shot a 73 with a similar scorecard, making one birdie and eight pars on the front with one bogey and a double on the back. Mierl totaled a 217 for the tournament.
Tyler Kaman had the low round of the day for Cameron, shooting a 3-under 68 with four birdies and an eagle on his scorecard. The senior finished his collegiate career with a total score of 220 at the regional.
Preston Holmes tied Kirk on Saturday with a 74, making four under-par holes to finish with a 225 54-hole score.
As a team,
Austin Phillips' squad totaled 149 pars, 49 birdies, and two eagles at the Pueblo Country Club this week. Mierl led the field with 39 made pars while Kirk had a team-high 15 birdies during the three-round event.
Colorado State-Pueblo won the event with an 845, besting Colorado Mesa and Midwestern State by one stroke. Oklahoma Christian claimed the last spot in the top-4 with an 848 total score. Those four teams advance to the NCAA D2 Championship.
MSU's Garrett Leek and Cal State San Marcos' Matthew Pennington both shot a 66 on Saturday to tie for the individual win with a pair of 204's. Pennington and Cal State Monterey Bay's Liam Allder advance to the National Championship as the top two individuals not on qualifying teams.
Cameron closes out a historic season, but the future is bright as four of the five in the lineup return for Phillips in 2022-23 to go along with a strong recruiting class coming in.
