Cameron Hits the Road to Face UTPB and ASU

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's basketball team continues the Lone Star Conference gauntlet as they travel to UT Permian Basin and Angelo State this week. The Aggies will visit the Falcons on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 5:30 pm and close out the weekend on Saturday at ASU for a 1:00 pm contest.

STARTING 5:
1. The Aggies would snap the three-game losing streak with a 54-43 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday inside the Aggie gym. Korie Allensworth scored a game-high 21 points, with eight rebounds and four steals, to lead Cameron over the Mustangs.

2. Alena Wilson leads the team in scoring and rebounds and shoots just under 45 percent from the floor. She averages 12.4 ppg and 7.5 rebounds a game. Katie King ranks second in the LSC for steals (2.7) and has the fourth most assists (4.3) in conference play.

3. UT Permian Basin has dropped five straight games. UTPB lost to West Texas A&M 81-54 last time out. The Falcons score 65.6 ppg and allow 64.6 ppg. UTPB shoots 35.1 percent field goal percentage and holds a 28.8 percent shooting from three-point range.

4. Angelo State leads the western division with an 8-1 LSC record, 5-0 in the division and 13-2 overall, after picking up two big wins last week over Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M. The Rambelles have a seven-game winning streak. Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant (16.3 ppg), Madeline Stephens (14.5 ppg), and Sawyer Lloyd (14.2 ppg) rank in the top 10 scorers in the LSC.

LAST TIME OUT:

Cameron would snap the three-game losing streak with a 54-43 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday inside the Aggie gym. The Aggies shot 31.3 percent from the floor and 20 percent from three while holding WNMU to 30.2 percent and 15.4 percent from deep.


ABOUT THE AGGIES:

CU is now 7-8, 4-5 LSC, 2-3 DIV., after splitting the two games over the weekend. The Aggies are averaging 63.1 points per game while surrendering 70.7 ppg. Cameron sits in the middle of the pack within the conference with a 4-5 record. Alena Wilson leads the team in scoring and rebounds and shoots an efficient 44.7 percent from the floor. She ranks 14th in the LSC with her 12.4 ppg and eighth with 7.5 rebounds per game. Katie King ranks second in the LSC for steals (2.7) and has the fourth most assists (4.3) in conference play.


SCOUTING THE FALCONS:

UT Permian Basin is 6-9, 3-6 LSC, 0-5 DIV., on the season after dropping five straight. In their previous game, UTPB lost to West Texas A&M 81-54. The Lady Buffs shot 50 percent from the floor and 43.5 from three while holding the Falcons to 27.8 percent from the floor and 36.4 from deep. Morgan Helgesen led UTPB with 15 points, and six rebounds, while Makayla Bingley had 10 points and five rebounds.

LAST TIME AGAINST UTPB:

Katie King played the hero, knocking down a shot in the final seconds to beat UT Permian Basin 67-66. A slow start put the Aggies into a hole, allowing the Falcons to take a 22-13 lead through one-quarter of play. Cameron then out-scored UTPB 21-13 in the second quarter to trail at the half by just one after a three-pointer by Korie Allensworth in the final seconds of the half. In addition to her heroics at the end of the game, King finished with 13 points and had six assists and four steals in the win. Cameron shot 39 percent from the field but made 14 three-pointers and forced 21 turnovers, with 15 coming on steals. UTPB shot nearly 50 percent in the game and outrebounded CU 40-29. Alexus Wykoff led the Falcons with 19 points.


SCOUTING THe RAMBELLES:

Angelo State comes into the weekend on a seven-game winning streak. They have a record of 13-2, 8-1 LSC, and 5-0 DIV. The Rambelles won two close games last week, taking down NO. 13 West Texas A&M 60-53 and Lubbock Christian 53-51 on a last-second shot. Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant drained a step-back jumper with under a second remaining to give ASU the buzzer-beating victory. Madeline Stephens led the Rambelles with 18 points and nine rebounds, and McGhee-Pleasant scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. ASU averages 70.3 ppg while allowing 61.6 ppg. They lead the LSC with 44.6 rebounds a game and block the third-most shots a game at 3.93.

LAST TIME AGAINST ASU:

Cameron flexed their offensive muscle, beating Angelo State 100-68, led by Maighan Hedge and Stephanie Peterson. Hedge and Peterson led that offensive surge. Hedge led the way with 28 points, shooting 12-for-19 from the field and made three shots from long range. Peterson scored 20 points on 13 attempts with 10 rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and two steals. They held ASU to under 40 percent shooting from the field and just 4-20 from long range. CU also outrebounded the Belles 41-38, just the second time this season they finished with more boards than their opponents. On the other end of the floor, Cameron, who averages over 11 three-pointers this season, hit nine shots from long range while shooting 55 percent from the field; they also left 11 points at the foul line and still scored 100 points for the first time since February of 2020.


WHO HAS NEXT:

Cameron returns home for a four-game homestand, kicking off against Oklahoma Christian on Jan. 19 at 5:30 pm, UAFS comes to Lawton on Jan. 21 for a 1:00 pm tip, West Texas A&M visits the Aggie Gym on Jan. 26, and Lubbock Christian closes out the homestand on Jan. 28 at 1:00 pm.
