SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron women's basketball team goes on the road and stuns Angelo State with a 61-57 win inside the Stephens Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies move to 8-9 overall, 5-6 in the Lone Star Conference, and 3-4 in the West Division.
Katie King led the Aggies in scoring for the sixth time this season and the second straight game with 18 points.
Alena Wilson scored 13 points, Kailyn Lay and Karley Miller recorded 10, Korie Allensworth chipped in six, and Alannah Gillespie and LaKya Leslie had two points.
Wilson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, King snagged seven, Miller pulled in five boards, Lay collected four, Leslie added three, Gillespie had two and Allensworth grabbed one rebound.
King dished out six assists, Lay added two, and Allensworth and Leslie had one.
Four Aggies swiped two steals, Allensworth, King, Lay, and Leslie, and Miller added one.
Wilson had a block.
The aggressive play by the Black-and-Gold was the difference-maker in the contest. Cameron's physical play kept the Belles out of their game plan. Down the stretch, the Aggies would hold ASU scoreless over the final 3:10 of the game, while CU closed the game on a 7-0 run to take the four-point victory Saturday.
King came out of the gate forceful on the court; she would record nine points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in the opening frame, leading Cameron to a 15-11 advantage after the first quarter. She would open the scoring from the Aggies with a three-pointer 90 seconds into the game. Midway through the quarter, the teams would be tied at 7-7. King would take over in the final three minutes, outscoring Angelo State 6-4.
King would make a jump shot in the second quarter to give the Black-and-Gold a 17-11 lead to open the scoring. Cameron would then go on a scoreless drought that lasted three minutes and 40 seconds. It would be snapped by a Miller three-pointer that would break the 17-17 tie, giving the Aggies a 20-17 lead. Gillespie would hit two free throws to extend the CU lead to five points at 22-17 halfway through the frame. The Aggies used a 2:08-minute scoreless period by the Belles to build a seven-point lead with four minutes until the break. Cameron would hold a 26-19 lead with 3:35 left in the first half but would be kept off the board down the stretch, with ASU closing the half on a 6-0 run to cut the Black-and-Gold lead to one at the half at 26-25.
The second half started with both teams scoring on four straight possessions early, with the Aggies coming through on top with a two-point lead at 31-29 after a Lay three. Cameron would maintain a slight advantage during the first half of the third quarter, holding onto a three-point lead at the mid-point at 38-35. CU would hold the lead in the frame for seven minutes and 12 seconds before an ASU layup by Sawyer Lloyd with 1:32 to go would give the Belles a 43-42 lead and close the quarter with a 6-4 advantage to take a 47-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
Angelo State would open the frame with a basket on their opening possession to build a four-point lead. A 5-0 run by CU would give the Aggies a 52-51 lead with 6:08 to play. The two teams would trade scores over the next three minutes, with the Belles coming out with a 57-54 lead with 3:10 to play, their last score of the game. Cameron closed the game with their defense holding ASU to 0-for-3 shooting from the floor and forcing two turnovers.
Cameron would shoot 44 percent from the floor, making 22-of-50 shots, hitting 6-of-18 three-pointers for 33 percent, and sinking 11-of-12 shots from the charity stripe. Angelo State would make 21-of-52 shots from the floor for 40 percent shooting; they were held to 1-of-9 from beyond the arc and made 14-of-21 free throws.
The Aggies will return home for a four-game homestand starting with Oklahoma Christian on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 5:30 pm.
