Aggies Take Down ASU

LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron completes the season sweep of Angelo State after a 56-54 win on Thursday evening inside the Aggie Gym. The Aggies have now won the last three games against the Belles.

The Black-and-Gold snap their losing streak, which keeps their postseason hopes alive with four games remaining in the season, as they improve to 11-13 over, 8-10 in the Lone Star Conference, and 5-8 in the Western Division.

Katie King turned in a team-high 19 points, Alena Wilson chipped in eight, Kailyn Lay and Kiara Lovings recorded seven, Korie Allensworth and LaKya Leslie added five, Kloe Heidebrecht had three, and Karley Miller scored two points.

Wilson pulled in a game-high 14 rebounds. Miller grabbed seven, Leslie snagged five, Allensworth and King collected four, Lay and Lovings had two boards, and Alannah Gillespie, Heidebrecht and Taliyah Johnson added one.

King dished out six dimes, Lay and Lovings handed out three, and Allensworth, Gillespie, Johnson, and Miller had an assist.

Wilson led the Aggies with three steals, King swiped two, and Heidebrecht, Lay, and Lovings added one.

Lay and Miller each block one shot.

CU shot 31.7 percent from the floor, making 20-of-63 attempts from the field, connecting on 7-of-28 from long range for 25.0 percent, and was 9-for-14 from the charity stripe. ASU would make one more shot in the game but only made 4-of-14 three-pointers.

Angelo State opened the game on a 6-0 run over the first five minutes before Lay made a jump shot to get Cameron on the board. Miller and King would hit shots to give the Aggies a 7-6 lead with 3:24 left in the opening quarter, but the Rambelles closed the first, scoring the last five points to hold an 11-7 lead after one.

In the second, ASU started with a 7-4 advantage to build a seven-point lead at 18-11. The Black-and-Gold would go on an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 19-18 after back-to-back three-pointers by Heidebrecht and Lay. The teams would trade baskets over the final 4:35, with the Belles taking a 26-25 lead at the half.

Angelo State stretched their lead to 33-25 to open the second half. CU responded with a 10-2 run to knot the score at 35-35 with four minutes left in the third. The defense locked in the rest of the frame, with the Aggies taking a 40-39 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

Both teams would bend but never break, as the largest lead in the game would be the eight-point lead ASU had early in the second half. Cameron would never lead by more than four the entire game, but the lead that mattered was in the Aggies' favor as the final buzzer sounded. In the fourth quarter alone, there were three ties.

Cameron will host UT Permian Basin on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1:00 pm. The Aggies will honor their two seniors before the start of the game. At halftime, CU will recognize the four newest Cameron Athletic Hall of Fame members and celebrate the 1983 men's golf NAIA National Championship team.
