LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's tennis team headed into the South Central Regional as the No. 1 seed and proved why. The Aggies hosted the fourth-seeded Mustangs from Midwestern State on Monday afternoon at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex, winning 4-1 and punching their ticket to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
CU had revenge on their mind after falling in the final week of the regular season at MSU 4-3. It started with the doubles, as the 25th-ranked duo of Vasilisa Polunova and Anastasia Uspenskaia topped the 35th-ranked pair of Amelia Lawson and Sydney Williams 6-3. Jenna Goessel and Magda Wawrowska gave the Black-and-Gold the 1-0 lead with a 6-2 at No. 3.
On court, two, Lea Manga and Karolina Glowinska were tied 4-4 when the Aggies secured the opening point.
Polunova swept the singles match at No. 1, and Wawrowska followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 win at six to give Cameron a 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs got their first point of the match at three as Manga fell 2-6, 1-6 to make it a 3-1 match score.
The match was closed out on No. 4 by Kateryna Rudenko, scoring 6-4, 6-3 for the win at four and giving Cameron back-to-back trips to the national tournament.
Uspenskaia was on the verge of earning the fourth point on court two, as she was up trailing 3-4 in the second set after taking the first 6-4, and on No. 5, Goessel was tied 3-3 in set two after taking the first 7-5 when the match was called.
The Aggies are now 16-3 on the season and will move on to compete at the National Tournament in Orlando. They await their seeding for the tournament, which will be May 11-16.
