Aggie Golfers hit their way to Nationals
With hard determination and complete concentration each shot can be expected to fall to the ground in every fairway from the tee, hit every green on the approach shot and sink every putt into the cup. All of these particular shots require smooth and rhythmic timing to be achieved from each of the ten members of the Cameron University Golf Team.
The Aggie starting five wrapped up the first half of the 1982 season by reaching the NAIA National Tournament, slipping from first to place third overall in the seventeen team lineup. The CU golf team had two All-Americans from the National tournament. Junior Cliff Pierce, a Lawton Ike product, finished third place individually achieving his second All-American plaque. Also awarded a plaque was senior Trey Hansen from San Antonio, Texas, finishing eleventh.
"Of course I was hopeful that our team could win the tournament, and when we didn't it was somewhat of a disappointment. But, to finish third in the championship and to have been in a position to win is gratifying," Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar said. "It was the best finish by a Cameron team in history, (the Aggies placed sixth in 1977 and seventh in 1978) so we have to be proud of our accomplishment. And to have two All-Americans for the first time in school history is also gratifying."
Before reaching the District-9 championship and NAIA Nationals the Aggies achieved many early honors slating one first at Central State University, one second at Stephen F. Austin, two third places at Sam Houston State and Oklahoma Intercollegiate, and fourth in the Wichita State Shocker Classic among an NCAA field of teams.
