1973 Men's Basketball Conference Champions

Cameron's basketball team swept to the championship of the "Top of Texas" basketball tournament in Wichita Falls, Texas, Jan. 4-6, in what has to be one of the highlights of the 1972-73 season. Cameron handled in succession Lubbock Christian, Bethany Nazarene, and Central State of Edmond. The scores were 78-61, 80-73, and 58-45, respectively. The three quick wins opening the new year put the Aggie overall record at 10-2, their best percentage of the year.

Suffering their first Oklahoma Collegiate Conference loss after four straight wins, the Cameron Aggies ran into trouble when they were soundly thumped by the Southeastern State College Savages, 91-73, in Durant. They played wihtout leading scorer Jerry Davenport who was suspended from the game.

After humiliating Arkansas Tech in the season opener, the Aggies went to Arkansas Jan. 15 and lost, 71-64. The earlier score was 117-67 on Nov. 16, in the Aggie Fieldhouse. Traveling to Weatherford Jan. 19, the Cameron Aggies suffered their second straight conference loss at the Hands of the Southwestern State Bulldogs, 73-63. The loss left Cameron with a 4-2 record in the conference and 10-5 overall.

Upping their Oklahoma Collegiate Conference record to a healthy 5-2, Cameron's Aggies squeezed past the Langston Lions, 61-59, in the Aggie Fieldhouse Jan. 23. Jerry Davenport amassed 32 points as the Aggies broke a three game losing streak, including two straight losses in the conference.

After breaking their three game losing streak against Langston, the Cameron Aggies turned right around and re-entered the losing column by dropping an 80-70 decision to the Pirates of Southwetern Texas University. Cameron's basketball Aggies registered their first win out of town (not counting neutral courts) Jan. 27 when they thrashed the East Central State Tigers, 84-54, in Ada. The second straight victory in conference action boosted their OCC record to 6-2 with an overall record of 12-6.

Cameron increased its conference record to 7-2 tying central state for a share of the conference lead Feb. 2 when the Aggies defeated the Bronchos, 51-45 at Edmond. Feb. 3 the Ags held on to a tie for the OCC lead when they traveled to Enid and thumped the Phillips University Haymakers, 79-65. Cameron managed a 55-27 rebounding advantage and the victory increased its record to 8-2 and 14-6 overall.

Returning home feb. 7 Cameron used a 15-point second half edge to defeat Tarleton State Texas, 80-65 in a game that was iced out a month earlier and almost again a second time. The game was tied 34-34 at the half but 14 second period points by Jerry Davenport and 10 more by Mike Fleming provided the winning spark.

Cameron traveled to Goodwell Feb. 9 and apparently took the Panhandle Aggies too lighlty as Coach Miller's team trailed most of the game. With just over five minutes left Cameron gained the lead for the first time and then built it to a five-point spread with about two minutes left. From there the Ags slowed the action and won it, 71-67, to bring their conference mark to 9-2.

Cameron trounched a spunky Southwestern team, 76-65 in the Aggie Fieldhouse Feb. 16 to set up a showdown conference game between the Ags and Central State the following week. Jerry Davenport had an outstanding night scoring 37 points, the most he gathered in one game all season.

Facing its biggest test of the season, Cameron met and defeated Central State at home, 58-55, to clinch at least a tie for the Collegiate Conference crown Feb. 23. It was the third time this season the Aggies proved their superiority over the Bronchos. The next night Cameron took its first conference title by defeating Phillips, 79-70. Season records were 13-2 and 20-6.
