Preston Merriman enters his first year as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Cameron University, overseeing the design and implementation of training for all Aggie athletic programs.
Merriman comes to Cameron after working in the strength and conditioning department at Brigham Young University, where he supported training for a wide range of Division I Olympic sports, including baseball, softball, women’s soccer, track & field sprinters, track & field throwers, men’s & women’s diving, and men’s rugby. He also assisted with football, contributing to warm-ups, speed development sessions, and on-field movement preparation. During his time at BYU, Merriman helped execute daily training plans, in-season programs, and long-term development strategies for athletes across multiple disciplines.
Alongside his hands-on coaching experience, Merriman developed a strong foundation in applied performance science through his work in BYU Student Wellness, where he coached students in fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle behavior change. He also gained advanced knowledge in sport performance through focused study on speed development, periodization, orthopedic rehab progressions, movement screening, and goal-specific strength training.
A native of Kingsville, Texas, Merriman earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. His coaching philosophy emphasizes building strong relationships, keeping athletes healthy, and creating efficient, sport-driven training systems that help Aggie athletes play fast, confident, and resilient throughout the year.
Merriman and his wife, Kylee, have one son, Grant.
