Men’s Hoops Defeats Texas A&M-International

LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron's men's basketball team tipped off the 2010-11 season by posting a 62-51 win over Texas A&M-International at Aggie Gym.

Cameron had things going its way most of the evening, leading by as many as 22 points before A&M made some inroads in the final three minutes.

The lead reached double figures late in the first half and remained there the rest of the way. The Aggie defense limited the Texans to three field goals.

Junior Thomas Razor, a Lawton High product, enjoyed an impressive debut with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Vinicius Telo, sidelined last season with an injury, added 13 points. Returnees Milton Garner and Nathan Murray added nine each.

The Aggies used their stifling defense to build a 24-8 lead at the 5:25 mark of the first half. Three-pointers by Terry Dawson, Razor, Nikola Vukadinovic and Garner accounted for half the damage.

But the Ags didn’t score again before intermission. A&M took advantage by converting five free throws to close to 24-13.

CU head coach Wade Alexander’s youngsters opened the second half with a 15-4 run to stretch their advantage to 39-17.

James Silvie was A&M’s only player in double figures with 10 points.

Alexander was pleased with the start but continues to look for depth.

“If you look out there, we’re playing a couple of freshmen, trying to get them with a couple of older guys,” he said. “They don’t have a clue what they’re doing. That was our concern the whole time. They just need time.

“Both times they had runs, we didn’t have our first group in there. We have a game tomorrow, so we don’t want to wear out those guys. The minutes are spread fairly evenly.

“We turned the ball over too much (15 times). Razor had a great game except for five turnovers and that kinda negates a great game.

“We have to take better care of the ball. That’s going to happen when you’re playing so many people.

“Defensively I thought we did really well the first half, and then we just let them get going the second half. We were fouling too much, not stepping over and taking charges, thinking the game’s over.”

Defense is the name of Alexander’s game and he liked what he saw, for the most part.

“Defensively, we were amazing,” he said. “Their leading scorer at halftime had three points.

“That’s what we want to do. We want to do that both halves. It’s not that we can’t, but we need some of the younger guys to step in and do it with us.”

The Aggies next play host to Panhandle State Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.
