Cameron Men Fall To 16th-Ranked Tarleton State

Box Score

LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 30, 2011) Cameron head coach Wade Alexander and his team traveled to Stephenville, Texas to take on the nationally-ranked (16) Tarleton State Texans for the Black and Gold’s first conference game of the season. The Aggies battled hard but lost in the end, 66-41.

Cameron (3-3, 0-1) struggled to find its rhythm offensively in the first half, as the Texans (6-1, 1-0) began to build a lead. The Aggies failed to find an answer for the home team early, trailing 36-14 at the first buzzer. Senior Milton Garner and junior Vinicius Telo led the Black and Gold in the half, finishing with five points each.

“We’re just struggling shooting right now,” Alexander said.”We had too many turnovers in the first half and got down by 20. We had to battle from way back. And we’ve had to do that the last three times (games).”

The second half was a different story, as Cameron came out and traded shot for shot with Tarleton. While the team was unable to mount a comeback, it was able to prove that it could both slow the Texans, as well as score on them.

“I thought it’d (the game) be a race to 50,” Alexander said. “We just didn’t defend as well as we needed to.”

Telo took over for Cameron offensively in the second half, going 6-11 from the field and 2-2 from the line for 14 points. He finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-16 shooting, while adding 3-4 from the charity stripe.

“Telo played well,” the coach said. “He’s got it going offensively, but we need him to rebound better. He’s kind of our leader right now. He’s getting it done.”

Cameron will return to action Saturday in the second game of a conference double-header against Texas A&M-Commerce (2-3, 0-1). Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. in the Aggie Gym.

“We got through our toughest road trips of this semester; now we have some home games,” the coach said. “Every game means something. A .500 conference record could get your into the playoffs this year.”
