LAWTON—The Cameron University volleyball team will compete in the Lone Star Conference Tournament this week for the first time in three years. The sixth-seeded Aggies will face off against the third-seeded Abilene Christian in the quarterfinal match-up.
Cameron is 15-14 overall and 9-11 in conference play. The CU women have struggled against Abilene this season, dropping both of the close matches they have played when opposing the Wildcats. The Black and Gold plan to put the previous losses behind them and empty their reserves in the quarterfinal contest, hoping to come away with the victory.
The Aggies will be looking to senior Adrienne Lawson and freshman Kelle Carver to continue to lead the team offensively. Lawson has recorded some 377 kills, while Carver has racked up an impressive 407 and has the second highest number of blocks for the team. Jenna Risoli, who is coming off a recent LSC Setter of the Week honor, will also be counted on to help steer the team to a conference tournament win. Her leadership on the court this season has been invaluable.
Defensively, CU has high expectations of standout Julisa Ocasio who has a phenomenal 570 digs this season, a number which is just shy of tying a CU season record. In addition to showing stellar defensive skills, the Aggie junior leads the squad in service aces with 32. Ocasio’s determination to win is easily noticed and will be critical to the team’s post-season success.
West Texas A&M is favored to win the tournament, having lost only two games this season in addition to claiming the LSC regular season title. The Lady Buffs have won the last five conference championships.
The LSC championships will be hosted by West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas. The Aggies quarterfinal match will be the first of the tournament and is set to begin at noon on Thursday, Nov. 10. All championship games will be streamed live on the LSC website, www.lonestarconference.org. A direct link can be found here: http://lonestarconference.org/sports/2010/10/7/video%20player.aspx
