Aggies Top Riverhawks in Season Opener, 9-6

Logan Grimes picked up the win in his first start of the season.

LAWTON, Okla. - After multiple delays, the Cameron Aggies baseball team finally got its season underway and they did so in a big way, opening up with a 9-6 win over Lone Star Conference rival Northeastern State on Sunday at McCord Field in the seven-inning game of a scheduled doubleheader.

A nine-run third inning was all the Aggies needed to top the Riverhawks and get their first win of the season.

Trailing 1-0, the Aggies loaded the bases by way of a walk, a Josh Dawson single, and a hit batter. Kenny Held, coming to bat for the second time of the game, sent one to far left field and cleared the wall for a grand slam.

P.J. Ortega was the second Aggie of the inning to find the bases loaded and delivered with a two RBI double to left field to make it 6-2.

With a pair of runners on third and second, Taylor Lyons finished off the inning with a bases clearing triple to make it 8-2. However, a throwing error from the Riverhawks allowed Lyons to come all the way home to end the scoring at 9-2.

The Riverhawks fought back and added three in the fourth and two in the fifth but were unable to completely overcome the Aggies monster third inning.

Logan Grimes (1-0) pitched 4.1 innings and picked up the win for the Aggies. He was tagged with five earned runs, gave up five hits and struck out as many in his first start of the season. James Rhodes picked up the save in two innings of relief.

The two teams also played seven innings of a scheduled nine inning game. The Aggies led 11-7 after the seventh when the game was suspended due to low light. It will resume on Monday at Noon.
