EDMOND, Okla. – The Cameron Aggies (5-0, 4-0 LSC) used a four-run sixth inning to top Lone Star Conference foe Central Oklahoma (3-4, 3-1 LSC) in the seven inning open game of the series in Edmond on Friday afternoon.
The Aggies struck first with a single run in their half of the third inning on a
Kenny Held single to left center to drive in
Chase Larsson.
UCO came back with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead until Cameron exploded for four runs in the sixth.
At the top of the inning,
Nate Valdez was hit by a pitch and advanced to second after a well placed bunt single from
Joe Halley put runners at first and second. Valdez was erased at third on the fielder’s choice play while Halley moved to second and was replaced at first by Andy Garcia.
Shane Azzopardi, in to pinch hit for Mark Mahany, drew four straight balls from new pitcher Matt Martzall to load the bases.
Martzall was pulled for Kade Kauk and struck out Aggie catcher
P.J. Ortega to record the second out of the inning. Kauk then walked
Taylor Lyons to bring in Halley to even the game at 2-2.
Kauk then knocked
Josh Dawson over to first on the hit batter bringing in Garcia to give the Ags a 3-2 lead.
Larsson then took Kauk’s 1-2 offering to right field which brought Azzopardi for the Aggies’ fourth run of the game. However, a throwing error by the Bronchos right fielder Austin Rycroft allowed Lyons to come in from third for the final points of the game and the Aggies leading 5-2.
Justin Watley (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching just 0.1 innings and facing one batter in the sixth.
James Rhodes picked up his second save of the season on two innings pitched.
Cameron returns to the diamond this afternoon for game two of the doubleheader.
