Aggie Men Get Revenge Over Southwestern, 71-63

Milton Garner posted 11 points and six rebounds

LAWTON, Okla. - Milton Garner posted 11 points and pulled down six rebounds as one of three Aggies to go into double figures to pushed the Cameron Aggies (13-9, 3-4 LSC North) over the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma (12-11, 3-4 LSC North), 71-63, Saturday night in Aggie Gym.

The Aggies were coming off a 79-66 loss to Southwestern on Thursday and responded with gritty defense and tough shooting on their home floor.

Head Coach Wade Alexander also mixed up his starting lineup yet again and found success with two freshmen in Desmond Henry and Jonathan Patino.

"Anytime you start two freshmen, the thought is that you are playing for the future," said Alexander. "But Desmond and (Patino) are playing at a high level and making tough shots count when we need them. They have both stepped their game up a lot in recent weeks."

Cameron ran out to a 4-0 lead but found themselves facing a run from the Bulldogs. The visitors scored the next eight following a pair of Chanceller Jones charity tosses.

Garner found his stride with fellow junior Thomas Razor to drain back-to-back triples to run the Aggies lead to five, 24-19.

The Aggies maintained their lead at one until a Leon Nelson lay up on a fast break point gave the Bulldogs the lead just before intermission. Head Coach Charlie Schaef's team went into the break up 37-33.

Southwestern was dominant inside in the first half, scoring 18 points in the paint to just two for the Aggies and outrebounded Cameron 18-7.

The halftime speech by Alexander was clear in the second half as the Aggies turned the tables, winning the second half battle on the glass 17-10 and  scoring 20 points in the paint to just 10 for Southwestern.

Showing his fire and senior leadership, a pair of late dunks by senior Nathan Murray did more than just get the crowd on it's feet.

"(Murray) has taken to his role as a senior but (the team's success late) was more about players being unselfish and finding ways to get the ball to the open man," said Alexander.

Murray finished with 16 points to lead the Aggies in scoring on 7 of 8 (87.5 percent) shooting from the field and made the most of his high percentage shot opportunities throughout the night.

Cameron finished the night shooting 51 percent (25 of 49) from the field and connected at a 56.3 percent (9 of 16) clip from three point range. They were 12 of 16 (75 percent) from the line and committed just eight turnovers.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Ross Moore with 16 points and shot 49 percent (25 of 51) from the field. Aggie Gym has not been kind to opposing three point shooters as of late and tonight was no different as the Bulldogs were able to sink only four of their 20 attempts (20 percent).

The Aggies are now in the thick of the LSC playoffs hunt as they regained their 4th place in the LSC North division. The Aggies are once again tied with Southwestern and every game down the stretch will be crucial. Cameron welcomes the Tigers of East Central to Aggie Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in another LSC showdown. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. in Aggie Gym and the game is presented by EZ Go.
