Baseball Aggies Split Doubleheader with No. 25 Incarnate Word as Larsson Sets New NCAA Record

SAN ANTONIO – Kenny Held, the nation’s most prolific home run hitter, got a pair of homeruns in game one and a pair of doubles in game two to lead the Cameron Aggies (18-9, 11-6 LSC) to a day one split with Lone Star Conference leader No. 25 Incarnate Word on Friday at Daniel Sullivan Field.

Chase Larsson also set a new NCAA Division II record for the most consecutive games with a home run. With his three-run shot in the second game, Larsson has now homered in eight consecutive games to beat Ben Slemmer’s 1998 record of seven.

The Aggies fell late in the series opener, 11-10, behind a five-run eighth inning from the Cardinals.

In game two, the Aggies got their revenge to the tune of a 13-0 swamping of the nationally-ranked Cardinals.

“We hit the ball pretty well today,” said Head Coach Todd Holland. “You’d like to have gotten the win in the first game, but it was just one of those games where we couldn’t put them away.”

In the opener, CU led 9-6 through 7.5 innings but allowed five runs (one earned) to come across the plate in the eighth.

The Aggies were not without their offense as Held belted a grand slam in his second at-bat of the game in the top of the second as a part of the Aggies seven-run outburst.

Andrew Garcia got in on the action with a two-run roundtripper of his own.

Held’s second homer came in the top of the seventh as a solo shot in an attempt to get the Aggies back into the game trailing 11-10. It was his 16th on the season.

Clay Vanderlaan (1-1) picked up the loss for the Aggies on 2.1 innings pitched. He scattered three hits and allowed four runs (one earned) to come in.

It was a turnaround of sorts for the Aggies in game two as they came out with their bats seemingly on fire.

They belted out 13 runs on 13 hits as Ricky Cramer (3-2) threw eight innings of shutout baseball to take the split for the day.

“I thought the guys did a good job of putting the early loss out of their minds,” said Holland. “You can’t hang your head and they came out focused and ready to win one.”

Josh Dawson and Held led the Aggies from the plate, combing to go 5-for-8 in the nightcap.

CU fed the Cardinals a steady diet of runs and managed to score in all but two innings of the run-rule shortened eight inning game.

Their big innings came in the third behind a Larsson’s record breaking three-run shot, his 14th of the year, and in the eighth, where they plated five runs including another three-run bomb from Joe Halley.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow in the rubber game to decide the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 P.M.
