Box Score LAWTON, Okla. (Jan. 23, 2012) ¬¬— Cameron found its way back to the win column Monday, with an 85-47 victory over the NAIA’s Bacone Warriors in the Aggie Gym.
“Its how we should play when we play teams we are better than,” said Head Coach Wade Alexander. “We took some losses and came out tonight like we should have. We played hard and got after it … that kind of made up for this weekend.”
Senior Thomas Razor got the Black and Gold (11-5, 7-3) going Monday, opening the game with a wide open three pointer, en route to 14-1 run to open the game. The Warriors would mount a comeback after the bad start, but failed to ever pose a real threat to the home team. The Aggies saw a number of contributions in the first half, on the way to a 35-18 lead, including 10 points by senior Milton Garner, five points by freshman Djuro Majstorovic and five by senior Thomas Razor.
As the second half went underway, Cameron began to pull away, extending its lead to more than 30 points midway through the half. The Aggies made a number of highlight plays on fast breaks, including two big dunks by sophomore Desmond Henry. Henry would finish the game with 12 points, on 4-5 shooting. The large lead allowed Coach Alexander to give chunks of playing time to players that typically come in for small roles in games, including the previously mentioned Majstorovic, as well as freshman Andrew “Grenada” Thomas.
“It’s good (to play those guys),” Alexander said. “It gives our starters some rest, but also gives other guys game experience in case they need to play down the line. It gets their basketball legs going, so that’s always solid.”
“Grenada really played hard coming out. He’s really improving every day in practice.”
Three Aggies found double-digits, Garner finished with 14, followed by Henry with 12 and senior Walter Battle with 11. Sophomore Jonathan Patino led team in rebounding with eight, and tied sophomore Craig Foster with five assists.
“We just wanted to play hard and do the things we are supposed to do … we did that tonight,” Alexander said.”We haven’t been doing that the last couple of games. We had an 8-game winning streak going; we’d like to get another 8-game, or more, going.”
Next up for Cameron is a game against the #5 ranked team in the nation, Tarleton State (17-1, 9-0), at 8 p.m. in the Aggie Gym. The women will begin the night with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
“We have the number five ranked team in the country coming to our place,” the coach said. “We need to come out ready to play. You don’t get many chances to get that highly ranked team to come to your place, so we need to take advantage of it.”
