Aggie Men End Season On High Note, 67-61

Box Score

LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 25, 2012)  —  Cameron ended its regular season with a bang tonight, defeating West Texas A&M 67-61 to complete the season sweep of the Buffs, something Head Coach Wade Alexander was informed had never been done by the Aggies.

“According to “CU” Eddie (Larson), this is the first time we’ve swept West Texas (A&M),” Alexander said. “So, that’s probably a correct statement.”

Cameron (14-10, 10-8) came out ready for its half of senior night, overcoming an early spurt by the Buffs (18-7, 12-6) to claim the lead at 11-9 with 13:55 left.  Milton Garner rose to the occasion, may be sensing it was his final time to show his skill set to the fans. Garner scored 20 of Cameron’s 30 first half points, going 6-9 from the field and 4-5 from downtown. Garner’s huge half helped CU carry a 30-21 lead into the half.  The Aggies limited WT to 7-24 shooting in the half, stifling the Buffs offense.

“Defensively in the first half, we did really well,” the coach said. “Milt Garner was just feeling it tonight. He did a great job of coming and setting the pace early. He made some shots … that always helps.”

CU came out in the second half and continued to apply offensive pressure, as the team picked up a number of huge buckets from Garner and a host of other Aggies. Garner would go on to finish the game with 33 points on 8-17 shooting 12-14 from the line.

The Aggies reached their largest lead of the night, 12, on a free throw by Garner with 2:33 left to play. WT fought through to the end, converting on three shots from beyond the arc to add pressure to everyone, except Coach Alexander.

“We were up enough, so there was not too much pressure,” he said. “We made our free throws down the stretch … that’s sweet way to seal a victory. We played good defense in the second half. That’s something we haven’t done the past four games. We did it tonight and got the victory.”

Alexander said Trevor Smith did a great job of creating havoc on the glass for CU. Smith finished with nine rebounds, four points and took three charges for the Aggies. The Black and Gold’s two seniors on the court also stepped up on senior night.

“Milt hit some big shots like he always does,” Alexander said. “And  (Thomas) Razor was solid defensively. Those two seniors definitely went out the right way.”

Razor, a product of Lawton High School, has played hard for the Aggies for the past two seasons after spending his freshman and sophomore years at Northern Tonkawa. Last season, he led the team in steals and this season he is the team’s second category leader in field goals made, 3-point field goal percentage, and free throw percentage. His constant hustle on the court has been invaluable to the men’s squad and his dedication to the game is always on display.

In his career at Cameron, Garner has shown his prowess as an explosive offensive threat who can score from anywhere on the court. He was named Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the week earlier in the year and has led the Black and Gold in scoring for each of his three seasons. As a senior, Garner has averaged a career-high 19.1 points a game and joined CU’s thousand point club earlier this year. He is currently 11th in all-time scoring at Cameron, with an opportunity to crack the top 10 in the playoffs. Garner also leads the team in three-pointers, rebounds, steals, minutes and free throws, showing his diversity on the court

Cameron also had two seniors on the bench, Walter Battle, who is battling an injury and Vinicius Telo.

“Walt (Battle) and Telo did a great job on the bench tonight keeping the team uplifted,” Alexander said. “They provided great leadership from that spot.”

Battle came to Cameron midway through the season to add interior toughness and an additional scoring threat in the paint. Prior to going down with an injury, Battle was shooting 64 percent from the floor to lead the team in field goal percentage.

Telo, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, came to Cameron after playing a season at Oklahoma City University and immediately wowed Aggie fans with athleticism. As a senior, Telo has battled through injury to come back and help his team for the postseason push. He is second on the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game and despite missing 12 games, leads the team in blocks with 11.

Cameron has been assigned a contest with Incarnate Word (16-10, 11-7) after clinching the fifth seed in the LSC Tournament. Cameron split with the Cardinals in two prior contests this season.

“They are a very good team,” the coach said. “They are playing well this time of year. They beat us last time we played; they are a very capable team. It’s a tough match up for us. They have bigs (big forwards) and are well coached. Now though, we all have clean records … let’s see what happens.”
