LAWTON, Okla. (March 30, 2012) — Incarnate Word got the better of Cameron in game one of a four game series Friday, picking up the 5-2 victory at McCord Field. The Aggies led for most of the game, but a three run sixth inning was enough to fuel the visitors past CU.
Cameron (16-15, 4-5) was able to manufacture a run in the first inning after a leadoff single by Taylor Lyons. Dawson stepped up next and bunted Lyons to second. A wild pitch allowed him to move to third before being driven in on a sacrifice fly by Brad Blumer.
CU would score again in the third inning, as Andy Garcia drove in Dawson from third base with a single to center field to extend the Black and Gold’s lead to 2-0. In both of Cameron’s scoring innings more damage could have been done, with the Aggies stranding two base runners in each inning.
Cameron starter Mike Carlson was cruising in the game until the fifth inning. After starting the inning with two quick outs, the Cardinals were able to string together a pair of hits and a walk to load the bases. Carlson allowed an RBI single and walked in the second run. The final run of the inning crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
UIW (9-13, 4-5) would add one more run in off Carlson in the sixth before he got pulled. Carlson went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The final run of the game was scored on Aaron Kleekamp in the 8th inning.
Cameron will get an opportunity to avenge this loss tomorrow as the teams meet again for a doubleheader at McCord Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
