Team effort leads CU over ACU, 65-59

ABILENE, Texas – Cameron made it a team effort on the road getting three players in double figures en route to a 65-59 win over Abilene Christian Saturday night.

Craig Foster led the Aggies (7-5, 3-3 LSC) with 18 points, with five rebounds, and five assists.  Tim Johnson added 12 points and led CU with seven boards, while Andrew Thomas (Country) chipped in 11.

Abilene Christian (5-7, 1-5 LSC) was led by Cornelius Cammock with 20 points while both Elliott Lloyd and Eric Lawton both had 10 points for the Wildcats.

The win for the Aggies in Abilene snapped a six game road losing streak that dated back to 2/1/12 at Angelo State.

In the first half both teams were locked in a defensive battle.  The largest lead of the half came from ACU who led by five (20-15) at the 9:02 mark before Aaron Thompson sank a three-pointer to close the Wildcat lead to two.

From there both teams traded buckets but it was Cameron leaving for the locker room with a 27-26 lead over Abilene.

In the first half Cameron went 47.8 percent from the field (11-23) and hit three from the arc off of nine shots, while ACU went 34.6 percent (9-26) with two shots from downtown. 

Cameron relied on seven different players for points with Johnson leading CU with six, and Foster added five points.  Abilene’s points mostly came from Cammock with 12 at the half.

Cameron started the second half with a 4-0 run before ACU hit back-to-back shots returning the CU lead to 31-30.

Following a 39-39 tie at the 12:57 mark the Aggies would go on a 13-2 run that started with Assad Robinson hitting a three-pointer and Foster had back-to-back layups giving CU a 52-41 lead with 10:43 remaining.

However, the Wildcats were not ready to give up without a fight as they would go on a 7-0 run, trimming the CU lead to 52-48 at the 7:39 mark.

Thompson would snap the CU scoring drought before ACU got a quick jumper from Dosh Simms.  Foster in the next possession hit his seventeenth point of the night keeping Cameron ahead by six, 56-50 with 6:36 left.

ACU continued working on the CU lead and Lawton hit a clutch three-pointer to making it a 56-53 game that forced Head Coach Wade Alexander to burn a 30-second timeout with 5:30 remaining.

The Wildcats would get within one point (58-57 CU) at the 2:36 mark before free throws would become a factor.  CU nailed some shots at the line and closed the book in Abilene winning 65-59.

Cameron would shoot 46.8 percent (22-47) from the field edging ACU’s 40 percent (22-55).  A major factor tonight was the 28 points off of the CU bench compared to nine from ACU.  The Aggies also won the rebounding battle 33 to the Wildcats’ 28. 

The Aggies will face another tough game on the road on Jan. 9 at Tarleton State.  Game time will be at 8 p.m. with live audio coverage being provided on cameronaggies.com
