STEPHENVILLE, Texas—For the first time since the 1996-97 season the Cameron University men’s basketball team gets a big win at Tarleton State on their home floor, 71-62.
The Texans have been known for their home court advanatage and hold a .800 win percentage at Wisdom Gym. However, streaks come to an end and they did Wednesday night.
The first half was a well-played ball game for both teams. The score was tied six times and there were seven lead changes in the first half. Tarleton State was able to capitalize off of the Aggies turnover by getting 11 points off of CU’s eight turnovers in the first half.
Cameron did well spreading the ball around in the first half. Three Aggies had five points at the half and three others went into the half with four points each.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first half. The Aggies shot 42% from the field, going 33% from behind the arc and 75% from the charity stripe. The Texans went 48% from the field in the first half, hitting three of their six three point attempts and four of their nine free throws.
The second half was a lot like the first. The Texans came out and scored the first three points of the half and the Aggies responded with five points of their own. This continued for most of the second half, until Asaad Robinson hit a long three pointer to get the Aggies to within one and then Tim Johnson converted a fast break layup to give them the lead. The Aggies would not give back the lead as Robinson and Rudy Harrell hit key shots down the stretch and the rest of the team hit free throws to put the game away in the last seconds with a 71-62 lead.
The Aggies were on fire in the second half, hitting 53.6% of their shots with a 30% three point percentage and a 64.3% free throw percentage.
Cameron got key contributions from multiple players tonight. Asaad Robinson hit 4-8 from behind the arc, on the way to 17 points and four rebounds. Craig Foster had 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals and Trevor Smith added 10 points of his own to the Cameron win.
The Aggies shot 48% from the field tonight, going 31.8% from behind the arc and 66.7% from the charity stripe. They had more turnovers than Tarleton with 14, but out-rebounded the Texans 38-27. Cameron’s bench should get some credit as they had 26 total points, compared to TSU’s 12 points off the bench.
Tarleton State shot 45.1% from the field, 33.3% from the three point line, and 50% from the free throw line.
With this win the Aggies improve to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in LSC conference games. The Texans' dropped to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in LSC games.
For their next matchup, Cameron will head home to the Aggie Gym to take on Texas A&M-Commerce at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12.
