LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University volleyball team lost in straight sets to their rivals from across the Red River, Midwestern State, today at the Aggie Gym.
Cameron started off with a 5-1 run in the first set, but the lead diminished quickly, as MSU went on rallies of four and five to go up 10-6. The Mustangs finished off the set with a 7-1 run to end the set 25-15.
In set two, the score was back and forth until the Aggies went on a four point rally to go up 11-8. The Mustangs took the lead back with a four point rally and extended it with a runs of three and four points to go up by seven. After trading points, MSU won the set 25-16 on an Aggie error.
The teams started the third set battling, leading at one point by two. MSU came back and took the lead 14-10, and from there they would control the match. They ended the set and the match 25-19 on a kill by MSU's Kaitlyn Molloy.
The Aggies were led by
Kelle Carver, who had 11 kills in 32 attempts, while both Maci Terrell and
Kat Evans had five kills apiece. They were assisted by
Kayla Hebert, who had 24 assists and eight digs.
Lauren Acuna had 10 digs and
Erin Hardy had 11 digs.
Midwestern State got efforts from multiple hitters, having six players with five or more kills. Kaitlyn Malloy led the team with eight kills and 20 digs. Casey Fletcher had 15 digs, while Nicole Marzik had 11.
As a team, CU hit under .100 percent and only had four team blocks. Midwestern State hit .220 and had six total blocks.
With the loss, the Aggies fall to 5-10 and remain winless in LSC matches at 0-6. The Mustangs are now 8-7 and 1-6 in the LSC.
The Aggies will take to the road for their next match, when they head to Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Okla. on
Oct. 8.
