Cook and Foster lead Aggies in season opener

Box Score
LAWTON, Okla. – Will Cook nearly put together a double-double in his Cameron debut to lead the Aggies to a 85-74 win over Oklahoma Panhandle in the season opener at the Aggie Gym on Friday night.

The win for Cameron was the first for head coach Nate Gamet in his third try.

"It feels great to get the first win at and to do it at home is special," said head coach Nate Gamet. "These guys bought into the program and understand what we want…they were really excited after the game for me and I'm glad this one is past us so we can move on."

Cook fired off 21 points with nine boards; Craig Foster matched him with 21 points of his own with seven boards, and six assists.  This was the first time since Jan 18, 2012 at Midwestern State that the Aggies had a pair with over twenty points in a game.

The story for Cameron in their opener was winning the rebounding battle against Oklahoma Panhandle, 39-24.

"Rebounding was big for us and we challenged our guards in the first half," said Gamet. "We aren't very deep in the posts…so we challenged our guards that if we get consistently every night then it will take the pressure off the big guys."

Cameron struggled to find an offensive rhythm early as Oklahoma Panhandle opened up a 10 point lead by the 11:07 mark.  CU then went on a quick 7-0 run and controlled the pace in the remaining minutes of the first half to take a small 41-38 lead into the half.

Cook led all scorers on the floor with 15 points and pair of steals, Foster nailed down eight points with a couple of takeaways.   As a team, Cameron shot 46.7% from the field.

OPSU nearly matched CU shot for shot, hitting 43.8% from the field, and drilled six buckets from downtown.

Cameron came out with swagger start off the second half launching a 14-3 run over OPSU to take a 13 point lead.  Panhandle responded back an 8-0 run forcing Gamet and company to take a timeout.

Steady offensive shots were response from the CU squad closing the door on OPSU with another 8-0 run and the season opener.

Tank Mayberry added 11 points for Cameron with eight boards; Desmond Henry scored seven in his first game in over a year.  As a team, CU shot 50% from the field.

Cameron will return to action on Saturday playing UT-Permian Basin at 6 p.m.
