Box Score LAWTON, Okla. – Second half struggles and cold shooting proved costly for Cameron as they would get shocked at home to Northwestern Oklahoma 57-51 on Wednesday night.
The Aggies (4-5) went up by 11 points and looked to control the game before the Rangers climbed out hole shooting well over 50% from the field in the second half.
"They (Northwestern) wanted it more and we gave them some confidence in the second half," said head coach
Nate Gamet. "We had chance to put them away in second half with an 11 point lead at home…we just chose not to get rebounds and let them stay in it."
Neither team had an easy time sinking buckets early with Cameron maintaining a possession lead for the majority of the half. The Aggies did end the half on a run after nailing a pair of free throws and
Craig Foster drilling CU's first three of the night with six seconds left on the clock. Cameron would lead at the half 27-20 over the Rangers; however they would trail in shooting 31% to Northwestern's 40% from the field.
Cameron continued to stretch out their lead to 11 points early in the second half before a series of Aggie turnovers opened the door for Northwestern to climb back into the ballgame. From there it was either team's game and both teams traded buckets until Rangers broke a 49-49 tie to hold CU to two points for the remainder of the game to win 57-51.
As a group Cameron was out rebounded by Northwestern 35 to 25 and was held to 31.6% shooting from the field; the Rangers would shoot 48.8% on their end of the court.
Foster would lead all scorers on the floor with 21 points and three steals.
"We talked about how important this game was for making the regional tournament, this game would kill us if we lost," said Gamet. "We can't lose home games and they knew what was at stake."
Cameron will host Southwestern Adventist to close out their 2013 home schedule on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7 pm in the Aggie Gym.
