Aggies rally past Javelinas in double overtime

LAWTON, Okla. – In a double overtime thriller at the Aggie Gym, Cameron rallied from 11 points back to defeat Texas A&M Kingsville, 82-79.

This was the first double overtime game for the Aggies since the 2010-11 season the eleventh in program history.

Cameron (10-6, 6-4 LSC) was led by Andrew Thomas “Country” who put up 18 points, with a block, and a steal.  Craig Foster after going scoreless in the first half went on to put up 17 points, while Kimric Dixon chipped in 12 points.
 
Texas A&M Kingsville (9-9, 5-6 LSC) was led by Rashad Basey who put up 27 points, while Dwight Taylor and Reid Wallace added 10 points.
 
In the first half Cameron got off trading buckets with Texas A&M-Kingsville until the 6:48 mark where the Javelinas went on a 11-2 run leading 43-32 with 4:21 remaining.

The Ags would go on a quick 5-0 run after an Asaad Robinson bucket at the 2:17 mark to pull within seven however they would leave for the locker room trailing, 37-29.

Through the first half both teams shot the ball well with Kingsville shooting 45.2 percent (14-31) from the field and Cameron going 40.9 percent (9-22). 

In the second half, Cameron continued nipping at the Javelina lead and tied the game at 42 by the 14:37 mark.   However, Texas A&M Kingsville would once again go on a run and lead by seven points with 6:56 remaining. 

Kingsville continued to keep it a two possession game until the 3:08 mark when Cameron got a jump shot from Foster and a Thomas two-pointer to tie the game at 66.    Cameron did have possession of the ball in the closing seconds but they couldn’t convert a game winner sending the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, Kingsville jumped out to an early two point led off of a Basey layup, then in the next possession Dixon fired off a three-pointer to pull Cameron ahead, 69-68. 

Cameron controlled the first overtime leading from the 4:32 mark.  However, with :38 remaining and a three point Aggie lead, Kingsville’s Reid Wallace was fouled while shooting a three.  With the game on line, Wallace knocked down all three shots at the stripe to season the game to its second overtime period at 75.

In overtime number two, the Javelinas took the opening points after a Basey two-pointer. Thomas would return on the Aggie end to tie the game for the seventh time at 77. 

Both teams would trade points until the 1:02 mark where Kingsville would take the lead (80-79) after a Dytrel Bracey layup.   In the next play Robinson got steal and was intentionally fouled with 23 seconds remaining sending him to the line and he would hit both shots sending Cameron ahead 80-79. 

After playing limited minutes the entire game Jonathan Patino was fouled with 12 seconds left and he would ice the game hitting both shots sending Cameron back into the winners’ column, 82-79.

For the game Cameron shot 41.7 percent from the field while Texas A&M Kingsville shot 47.5 percent.  The difference in the game was fouls with Kingsville racking up 24 compared to Cameron’s 15. 

The Aggies were sent to the line 28 times and made 25 shots throughout the game.  Kingsville on the other hand went to the line 21 times and hit 16 shots. 

The win for Cameron kept them perfect at home this season at 7-0 and presently has a nine game win-streak at the Aggie Gym.

Cameron will return to action on Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. against Incarnate Word with an opportunity to move into second place in the Lone Star Conference standings.
